Senior art exhibit open through May 14 The Division of Fine Arts is present ing an art exhibit featuring the paintings of senior Katherine V. Lobdell of Brevard. The exhibit will be held in Spiers Gal lery through Saturday, May 14. Spiers Gallery is located within the Sims Art Center on the Brevard College campus. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, or by appointment by calling 883-8292. Alpha Chi gets comfortable on campus by Michael Cohen Special to The Clarion Late this past fall, Brevard College was granted its petition for the installation of an Alpha Chi chapter on campus. Alpha Chi, a nationwide organization open to students from all academic disci plines, honors juniors and seniors in the top 10 percent of their classes. The honor society boasts some 300 chapters with lo cations in 45 states and Puerto Rico. Once a year, .students nationwide are invited to join the organization with an nual inductions totaling more than 11,000 new members. BC recently inducted eight students into its own chapter to serve as chartering members under the leadership of Professor Tom Bell. Those inducted include Sarah Bruning-Jacks, Michael Cohen, Rebecca Cox, Ray Gill, Jayne Hall, Monte Sorrels, Dustin Stepp, and Sophia Yugay. These students were also recognized as charter ing members during the Awards Day cer emony on Wednesday, April 20. Despite its youth. Alpha Chi has al ready made its presence visible on campus with its co-sponsorship of the Gilbert- Chappel Distinguished Poet Series held this past April 26 at the Porter Center for Performing Arts. Dir. of Public Relations Brevard College has announced the names of students who will participate in its unique Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education (WLEE) Program’s Immersion Semester m the fall. Selected were - senior Laura Caldwell of Pike Road, Ala.; junior Carrie Kauffman of Carmel, Ind.; junior Will Key of Greensboro, N.C.; sophomore AJ Knotts ofCumming, G* sophomore Ben Marchman Sharpsburg, Ga.; junior Bethany Patterson of Wake Fore4 N.C.; junior Greg Rich of Roanoke, Va.; junior Jack Spence of Raleigh; junior Nikki Ulmer of Gloucester Point, Va.; and sophomore Nicole Vullo of Wickliffe, Ohio. Brevard College’s Immersion Se mester is an intensive educational op portunity that allows students who are majoring or minoring in the WLEE pro gram to develop their teaching and leadership abilities. During the semester, the 10-mem- ber group will also work towards earn ing their Wilderness First Responder certification as well as participate in a variety of day-long and extended trips including a 21-day expedition, a three- day caving trip and a five-day sea kayaking trip. The students will study and ap ply theories and principles of small group dynamics; teaching techniques and methods; and leadership prin ciples, including problem solving, group member roles, decision making, ethical issues, communication skills and a variety of other concepts.
