The Clarion Volume 71, Issue 6 Serving the Brevard College community since 1935 February 1, 2006 Bobby Poss named third head BC football _ 9 -■ |— ~H Colleee and have all co coach since December by Adam Beeson Managing Editor Brevard College recently announced that Bobby Poss will be the third coach in four weeks to head the school’s new foot ball program next fall, less than seven months before the Torna does are set to take the field for their season opener. Poss, the former coach of two-time 4-A state champion A.C. Reynolds High School, comes to Brevard following the withdrawals of NCAA Division 11 assistant coaches Ralph Isernia and Tommy Laurendine, who quit shortly after accepting the position. “Unfortunately, 1 believe some young assistant coaches are so enamored with the oppor tunity to be a head coach that they don’t fully consider the amount of effort that goes into starting a program from scratch,” Athletic Director Tom Collins said. Laurendine, an assistant at Southern Arkansas, was the first to change his mind on the posi tion. “[Laurendine’s] exact words to me were that his wife had decided she didn’t want to move,” Collins told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “1 un derstand Tommy’s decision. 1 just wish he had not taken the job.” Two weeks later, Isernia, of fensive coordinator and offen sive line coach at the University of Charleston (W. Va.), quit just one day after being hired. Since these discouraging Head Football Coach Bobby Poss experiences, Collins is feeling more optimistic that Poss, who retired from A.C. Reynolds in 2003, will stick with the school’s effort to rebuild the program af ter 56 years. “1 am extremely pleased that Bobby Poss has agreed to be the head football coach at Brevard College and have all confidence that he will build a competitive Division II program here,” Collins said. “His record of build ing winning teams, with five state championships at three dif ferent 4-A high schools in North Carolina, is unmatched as far as 1 know.” After being away from coaching for three years, Poss says that he will begin analyz ing videotapes of possible re cruits and conducting interviews with candidates for assistant coaching positions in time for the Aug. 2'6 home opener against University of Virginia- Wise. “A lot of work will be re quired to get our program ready for the 2006 football season,” Poss said. “1 am thrilled about the opportunity to lead the see Poss, page 3 • “ .
