Geology may become new major

Geology may become a new
major for Brevard College, if so
that means new available courses
and a new faculty member
It all started when junior
class vice president Aaron Mot
ley suggested before the SGA
that a geology major would be
an appropriate and beneficial
addition to the college’s pro
grams. “It’s a very outdoor ori
ented major,” Motley said “and
that is a big part of this school.”
Motley is an environmental sci
ence major and geology minor,
and is also the president of the
geology club.

posal to pass: A list of reasons

Coach Poss inducted to ISU
Athletic Hall Of Fame
Indiana State University
announced last week the induc
tion of seven members into the
2006 cleiss of the Athletic Hall of
Fame. Among the new members
is Brevard College’s head foot
ball coach Bobby Poss.
Poss was known as a gentle
giant during his time at Indiana
State where from 1969-1973 he
made an impact on and off the
field. He was named to the As
sociated Press All-America Sec
ond Team as an offensive line
man after his senior year in 1972.
He was also an Honorable Men
tion All-American selection in
1971. Poss was involved in a
variety of activities on campus
while at school and earned the
McMillan award in 1972 and
1973, which was given to the ISU
athlete who best displays lead
ership, scholarship, athletics and
general contributions to the
community. He was also recog
nized by SPORT magazine as the
College Athlete of the Month in
November of 1972 citing not
only his football prowess but
also his dedication to underprivi
leged children in Terre Haute.
Since graduating from Indi
ana State, Poss has become a
very successful football coach.
He won five high school state
championships in North Caro
lina and was named the North
Carolina Coach of the Year three
times. He became Brevard
College’s head football coach
last month.
Along with Poss, ISU will
James Brumfield (football and
track, 1966-70), Roy Burris (base
ball, basketball, and track, 1922-
25), Gerry Gluscic (football,
1976-79), Debbi Ramseyer (cross
country and track, 1989-93),
DougReifsteck (wrestling, 1980-
84), and William Welch (gradu
ate, 1950 and coach).
The Indiana State Athletic
Hall of Fame began its induc
tions with five classes from 1982
to 1986. After 11 years without a
class, the inductions began
anew in 1998 and the Sycamores
have added new representatives
in each of the past nine years.
The seven new inductees will
represent the 14th induction
class and bring the ISU Hall of
Fame total to 85 members.
The Hall of Fame induction
ceremony will take place on Sat.,

support from the SGA, and a list
of signatures from other stu
dents who thought that a geol
ogy major would be good.
Motley collected over 100
signatures from students and
faculty members in support of
the major Geology professor Dr
Jim Reynolds said that just a few
years back a student named An
gela Labarbera got Geology ac
cepted as a minor in a similar fash
ion, which shows how much of
an effect students can have on
the school. “1 think it fits into
Brevard perfectly,” said
Reynolds.
If the major is accepted, a
new faculty member would be
hired to teach lower level geol
ogy courses, and new courses
such as stratigraphy/sedimentol-
ogy, petrology, and physical
oceanography would be avail
able. Geology would be the only
physical science major available
at Brevard, all other science ma
jors are life sciences.
A geology major would
likely bring in more students to
Brevard and there are several
students that currently attend
Brevard College that would
change their major to Geology if
it were offered. Both Motley and
see Geology, page 2
