I do the housing, which comes first because 1 have 16 resident advisors that need sup port. I’m also the advisor to C.A.B. Do you ever find it taxing? The crazy hours that come with duty can take a lot out of you. I enjoy it, but, it conflictions with different things I do. I recently received word you will be leaving us soon. Care to comment on why? Mike and I want to go to Raleigh to be closer to friends and family. I was also looking for more of an eight to five job. My current job doesn’t work well with being a newly wed. What are you plans for the fu ture? As 1 said before, I’ll be mov ing to Raleigh with my husband. However, I’ll begin working at North Carolina State University, as an Academic Advisor. I’ll also be teaching a first year class that’s similar to our own FYF, however this class focuses on finding a path of study. What are some of your more memorable times here at Brevard College? I dig the coffee shop, it’s been fun for me to see it grow in popularity. Just coming here was crazy in itself 1 got to know the resident advisors quickly. My time here has been fun and ex citing. You came to our campus as a celebrity of sorts; any com ments on your time with “Sec ond Chance” on TLC? Well, it was fun being on there and it worked! I mean 1 did marry Mike after all. But the show unfortunately no longer airs. Do you have advise to those of us who are about to enter into the real world? Yes! Take advantage of Lydia O’Dell’s services. Con sider graduate school, and as- sistantships. Free money is al ways good. Get as much experi ence in school as you can. Mattes Take Valentine's Day: remember or regret when the glory days of Roman Empire had almost come to its by Matt Rutherford Arts & Life Editor So, Valentine’s Day is here once again. Everyone is run ning out to some store buying up chocolates, both expensive and cheap. But has anyone ever really wondered why we do this? I personally want to know why I have to spend money on something that I’m not even going to have the pleasure of enjoying! To start, Valentine’s Day is said to come from St. Valen tine. St. Valentine was a priest in Rome during the third cen tury, who served Emperor Claudius II. This was around closing stages. Lack of quality bureaucrats led to frequent civil rivalry. Learning declined, taxa tion increased, and trade slumped greatly. Various groups such as the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks and Mongolians from Northern Europe and Asia in creased their assault power on the empire’s boundaries. The empire had grown far too large to be shielded from outside hostility and internal chaos with existing forces. And, thus more of capable men were required to be recruited as sol diers and officers. Claudius de cided that only the young men who did not have wives and families were suitable for his armies because they were not emotionally attached. Valentine was outraged by this and continued to marry sol diers who happen to find them selves suddenly in love. Natu rally, good ole Claudius found out about Valentine’s under ground love circuit and had him killed. Other stories suggest that Valentine himself sent the first valentine from prison to a young girl he was in love with. One other legend gives an account of St. Valentine helping Chris tians who were being horribly mistreated in Roman Prisons. Now that you’ve had your daily oral facts, you can rest easy; you buying your girl friend or significant other that Godiva is complete founded with good reason. It’s just a shame that it has to be so ex tremely commercialized and crammed down your throat the day after New Years rolls around. I’m fairly certain that most people are aware of the holiday, and if they are not and they’re forgetting, that person will more than likely get a nice little wake up call from an an gry partner.
