Page 16 SPORTS The Clarion — May 2,2006 BC baseball splits double-header with Bluefield The Tornados were back in action on April 22 as they took on the Bluefield Rams in AAC action. In game one, Brevard sent out senior Tom Grant to the j Senior Zach Tolbert at bat photo by John Billingsley mound. Grant cruised through the first 3 frames but surren dered 2 runs in the 4*, giving Bluefield a 2-1 lead. In the 6*, Bluefield added to their lead, plat ing 3 more runs as Bluefield’s Mueller belted a 3 run homerun on a 2- 2 change-up. With the out look looking dim, the Tornados came roaring back in the bottom of the in ning, scoring 4 times to tie the score, highlighted by Zach Tolbert’s 2 run single. Brevard then went to Junior Brooks Owenby to hold the tie for the Tornados. Owenby was flawless in the last 3 innings, not allow ing a run, setting the table for 9"' in Men’s tennis inks three Brevard Head Coach Paul Thomson signs three prep stars for fall of 2006. Luis Maselli of Sao Paulo Brazil, Nolan Wiese of Sioux Falls South Dakota and Andrew Thompson of San Antonio Texas will join the Brevard Tennis program this August. “We are very excited about our recruiting class. All three are great players and superb students.” Wiese who signed in the early fall period will be joined by Masseli and Thompson. They will add a punch to the top of the line up as well as create depth at the bottom. “This fall should be interesting. We have seven or eight guys now who are going to be fighting it out for a spot in the line up. It should make for a more intense atmosphere at practice and will force the guys to push one another to get better.” Wiese and Thompson are high school standouts at their respected institutions who won 229 high school matches between them. Maselli is a strong experienced player as well and has ITF tournament experience in his home country of Brazil. In the 9*^, Kody Hightower led the inning off with a double. Brian Ennis was then intentionally walked, and D.J. Perrin came to the plate. Perrin belted a long fly ball that hit off the right field wall, giving the Tornados the 6-5 come from behind victory. Brooks Owenby picked up his 4“' win on the season in relief. In game two, it was much of the same as Bluefield jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. The Tornado bats did not come alive for the 7 inning affair as Bluefield was victori ous 3-0. Brandon Ball led the Torna dos offensively with 2 hits. Sophomore Hunter Fish started, and could not find his control, working 3 1/3 innings, walking n}ounaph^^b^^mBiiiu^si^ four.
