executive board shall adhere to

Handbook or be subject to im
peachment.”
Dimond says that his mo
tion to impeach Motley was not
a personal move against the SGA
president. Motley, however, dis
agrees.
While pointing out that the
senate has the authority to im
peach him for any student code
violation. Motley believes that
his offense is not worthy of the
motion and is simply a “personal
vendetta” from members of SGA.
Motley, however, admits
that he was guilty of an alcohol
code violation on the night of
the incident.
Around 11:00 p.m.. Motley
said, a campus security guard,
two resident advisors and three
assistant directors of student life
knocked on the North Village
door where he was hanging out
with friends. Motley said that he
initially resisted allowing the
party to enter the room because
they said it was simply a noise
complaint. However, Motley
says that the two resident advi
sors in the group entered
through the bathroom, which
was adjoined to the neighbor
ing room.
Motley admits to consum
ing alcohol, but says that he had
been drinking exclusively in
Jones Hall, where alcohol is per
mitted for students over 21. Al
cohol was found in the North
Village room and everyone in the
room was written up for an alco
hol violation.
The incident will beverified
on September 6, when the spe
cial session will open with
Dimond reading a statement of
accusation against Motley. The
president will then follow the
statement with a rebuttal, and
the senators and house mem
bers will debate articles of im
peachment. Articles of impeach
ment must be approved by a 2/3
majority vote.
If any articles of impeach
ment are approved at the special
session. Motley will face a judi
cial hearing that will consist of
the senate, who will vote on the
removal of Motley as president.
Senior class president Jor
dan Huppert says that it is im
portant for students interested
in the impeachment process to
contact their class senators.
Senators will be voting on the
issue, and it is important for them
to hear feedback from the stu
dent body, Huppert said.
Chief Justice Josh Rosen
reminds students that the im
peachment process is a lengthy
procedure, and no decision will
be made immediately.
This Week in SGA:
Executive Board discusses
patio dining and more
by Jamie Michaels
Opinion Editor
The big news in SGA this
week was, of course, the motion
to impeach President Aaron
Motley. But there were some
other noteworthy issues:
The Executive Board began
work this summer on getting pa
tio dining at Meyers Dining Hall.
It’s a project that will take some
time to finish, but the first order
of business will be to put up a
wrought iron fence, designed by
campus architect Mike Micuda.
SGA will talk again in the com
ing weeks about how much of
the operating budget it will con
tribute to this project this year.
CAB is looking into getting
BC a closed circuit TV station
which would constantly run cur
rent movies. The issue is being
negotiated now between the ser
vice provider and CATV, the BC
cable provider, located across
French Broad Street behind the
SAFE attic.
Club budgets are due to
SGA Treasurer Sarah Lange this
Monday, September 4. Club
Presidents/Treasurers may email
completed forms to Sarah, give
them to her personally, or drop
them in her campus mailbox. She
also mentioned that last year
over $5,000 of allocated club
funds went unspent. So clubs,
don’t overestimate your bud
gets, and spend your money!
And lastly, SGA will open
nominations for elections next
week at the Senate meeting. On
the executive board, the secre
tary position is open.
Other open positions are
senior class secretary and
sophomore class president.
Consult the SGA Constitution or
contact Josh Rosen regarding
eligibility.
Next week’s meeting will be
a Senate meeting at 7:30 p.m. in
MG 125. Immediately following
the Senate meeting there will be
a special meeting of the joint ses
sion to consider charges of im
peachment against President
Aaron Motley.
