Clarion SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE Volume 72, Issue 6 COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 September 29, 2006 Twelve students inducted into Alpha Chi Amanda Ivey, Dr. Ralph Hamlett and KImberlee Cooper at Induction by Amanda Ivey Staff Writer On Friday 22 September 2006, twelve students were inducted into the BC chapter of Alpha Chi. For everyone who is wondering how in the world they managed to miss the opportunity to pledge, rush, and be inducted into Greek life on our small campus, I regret to inform you missed nothing of this sort. Instead, Alpha Chi represents not a sorority or fraternity, but a national college honor society de signed to recognize those of ex ceptional academic record. Re quirements for admittance include being of junior or senior status with an academic standing in the top ten percent of one’s class, as well as being enrolled at least part-time with a minimum of thirty previ ous hours of coursework at Brevard. The inductees were admitted to the society in a ceremony held in the pavilion of the Porter Center The ceremony included a talk by Dean Hardt regarding the role of scholars outside of the classroom and warnings against “intellectual smugness.” Quoting Mark Twain, among other American authors, he praised the inductees for their aca demic records, while reminding them not to “let schooling inter fere with” their “education.” The induction concluded as each student was pinned by a faculty member of special influence to them in their academic pursuits, followed by a recitation—almost in unison—of Alpha Chi’s pledge. Dr Bell encouraged each of the students to wear their pins “of ten.” Students inducted were: Sarah Carlson, Kimberlee Cooper, Chris topher Dimond, Ryan Houghton, Jordon Huppert, Amanda Ivey, Stephanie McCall, Sonya McCall, Shane Parreco, Michael Spradlin, Bret Stewart and Rain Tree. BC plans fall campus celebration by Joseph Chilton Staff Writer Students will get a small break from their daily routines next Thursday when Brevard College hosts a “Fall Campus Celebration” for faculty, staff, and students. The event will take place from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on the academic quad. In case of inclement Photo by BC Media weather, the festivities will be re located to Myers Dining Hall. The proceedings will begin with a brief address from Brevard Col lege President Drew Van Horn. Following the president’s speech, refreshments will be provided and those in attendance will have time to socialize. According to Dean John Hardt, “students in attendance will gain valuable and interesting informa tion about significant recent accom plishments on campus and also hear about upcoming campus plans and priorities.” In order to facilitate this event, 8:30 classes will dismiss at 9:30 instead of 9:45, and 10:00 classes will be delayed until 10:15.
