The Clarion Homecoming PhotoSpread, page 8 # Volume 72, Issue 8 SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 October 13, 2006 Dirty Dozen brings out BC's inner cliild by Shane Perrico Special to the Clarion BC received an unlikely—and partially unwanted—treat last Friday, when the lively New Orleans-based Dirty Dozen Brass Band performed in front of a sold-out Paul Porter Center 1 say “partially unwanted” due to the reaction of some older community members to the performance. Steve MacQueen, managing director for the Paul Porter Center, observed more than 40 ‘walkouts’ before intermission. The majority of those who left mid-performance, openly expressing their personal dissatisfaction, were senior citizens. Steve came to the simple conclusion that “you can’t please everyone.” Aside from a few disgruntled elders, the show was a resounding success. The band performed effortlessly, and with exuberant enthusiasm as it moved from song to song, rarely pausing for a break. “1 think this is the best show I’ve ever seen here” stated Brevard College graduate and music appreciator Kevin Penley. Enthusiasm on stage culminated at the end of the show with a massive ‘second- line’ forming; the band marched through the audience, and carried a huge hne of dancing people back onto stage with them. Despite some audience members’ early abandoimient the Dirty Dozen, the majority made it clear that they were more than pleased. Once the second-line proceeded up onto the stage, an elderly woman began dancing with her husband as if she were 16 again. The woman, with a huge smile and a lively hop, even slapped see Dirty Dozen, page 4 SGA inducts new officers by Jamie Michaels Opinion Editor This week the Student Government Association elected and inducted new officers. On the Executive Board, one position was available. Kellee Bonnell defeated Leigh Aim Beatty in a vote of 87 to 67 for Executive Board Secretary. In the Sophomore Class, with a vote of 27 to 12, Ryan Burleson beat Michael Hicks Sarah Carlson, Kevin Harris of the Dirty Dozen, and Ceci Gatungo (ieft to right) for the position of President. Freshman Class officers were elected for the first time. In a vote of 41 to 26, Nicole Anderson won the Presidency. She ran against Ryan Fiffick. Kayley Duval is the new Freshman Class Secretary. She won with 31 votes to opponent Sean Donahey ’ s 21. And finally, Kayla Ballard defeated Mandi Pearson in a vote of 41 to 15. Vandalism damages tennis courts by Eric Grafton Assistant News Editor During the wee hours of Sunday morning, a bike rack that had previously resided outside of North Village 8, found itself forcibly relocated. The bike rack was discov ered by Tennis Coach Paul Thomson. Stan Jacobsen, Head of Security, surveyed the damage caused by the act of vandalism, and determined that several people were likely involved.
