The Clarion {October 27, 2006 — Sports - Football season ends on a high note by Joseph Chilton Staff Writer Athletic coaches regularly spout the line “it is not where you start, but where you finish” at their players. That phrase is especially applicable to this year’s BC Tor nado football team. After struggling through a 0-6 start, the young team summoned enough grit and heart to finish the season on a victorious note, win ning their last two contests of the season. BC earned its first victory of the year on Oct. 14 by defeating Chowan University 10- 5 . They added a second victory a week later, outscoring LaGrange College 35-27. The Tornados, made up mostly of freshmen, struggled early in the season in the face of a tough sched ule. In their first 6 games, BC faced 3 extremely athletic opponents from the prestigious South Atlan tic conference, including Newberry, which is the number one NCAA Division 2 team in the Southeast, according to NCAAsports.com. The team also faced a stout North Greenville squad, ranked number 1 in the nation among members of the National Christian Colleges Athletic Asso ciation. In the final 2 weeks of the sea son Brevard reaped the benefits of their grueling early season sched ule. Against Chowan, Tyrone Arrington spurred the Tornado’s ground attack with 97 yards on 19 carries, and Michael Moore caught a 40-yard touchdown strike from Will Cox to lead the offense. Line backer Dustin Lineback anchored the Tornado defense, making 9 solo tackles and 5 assisted stops. Leading 10-5 late in the game, the Photo by John Billingsley Tornados held on at the goal line, stopping Chowan on first and goal from the 3 yard line on 4 consecu tive plays. The following week, Brevard got its offense clicking on all cylin ders as the team put a season high of 35 points on the board in the win over LaGrange. Trailing 27-21 after 3 quarters, BC rallied in the fourth quarter, scoring the last 14 points o f the game to come from behind and Tyrone Arrington, Donald Hudson, and Rashad Neely all ran the ball into the end zone for BC, while Seth Corliss and Donald Hudson both hauled in receiving touchdowns. With the pair of wins, Brevard College closes their first competi tive football seasonsince 1950 with a record of 2 wins and 6 losses. Volleyball Aces UVA-Wise by Amethyst Green Staff Writer When Brevard Volleyball was warming up on Tuesday night, it was easy to tell the team were ready to beat Virginia Wise. The first game was close, but of course Brevard pulled it off Then the last games were intense. How ever, Brevard did not break or give up. There were many spectators at this match, and the women made it worth their while. The score for the first game was 30/24, the sec ond game ended at 30/15, the third game’s score was 29/31, and the final game resulted in a score of 30/28. The players had excellent stats this match. Freshman Brooke Sea man had 11 kills, Jessica Whitmire, a junior, made 10 kills, and Jami Perry, a sophomore, had 37 set assists and 12 digs. Junior Brit tany Holliday came through with 15 digs, and freshman Cori Emory, made 10 digs. All of the women played excep tionally well, and were proud of their win. Although they had a rocky start, the lady Tornados have turned the season around and have had several wins during the second half As the season will soon come to a close, the girls can hold their heads high knowing that they have what it takes. The next home game is Satur day Oct.28 at 2 p.m. against Bluefield.
