The Clarion Have a divine Volume 72, Issue 20 SERVING THE BREVARD COLLEGE COMMUNITY SINCE 1935 Spring Breal! March 2, 2007 Student crime readies a new liigli by Tom Cowan News Editor Tuesday Feb.27 set a possible all time record for the highest num ber of student-involved incidents reported to campus security. 3 of the 6 incidents reported Tuesday have resulted in 6 students facing marijuana possession charges. According to the campus secu rity records, most of the incidents were reported after a fire drill in Jones where all rooms had to be cleared by residence assistances (RAs). The surprise visits lead to the search of one room where RAs reported numerous contraband items sitting in plain site. In this room security found pipes, beer and wine bottles, a small amount of marijuana, and a digital scale. In another Jones room, RAs reported finding incense and a chair, which was stolen from the Jones Lobby. In another room in Jones, RAs found a dog by itself, which had to be walked outside for the fire drill. RAs also reported the refusal of two students to leave the Jones Lobby during the fire drill. The students left the lobby after being asked to do so repeatedly. Other incidents that occurred Tuesday evening involved the Brevard Police Department. Brevard Police reported to cam pus security that they had pulled over a vehicle containing 4 BC stu dents who all received misde meanor charges of marijuana pos session. Police were also called to the North Village where a Campus Life staff member searched a student’s room and found a pipe, a bong, a scale, several large knives, and an unusually large amount of marijuana. The student received a felony marijuana possession charge, a felony charge for main taining a dwelling where drugs are sold, and a misdemeanor charge for possession of drug paraphernalia. Faculty members of the BC’s science department are anxiously waiting to see if the scale confis cated by police is the same expen sive scale that was stolen from an MSX classroom on Feb. 22. Stan Jacobsen says that in his five-year career as BC head of se curity, he has never recorded so many incidents in one day. While crime on campus was relatively mild last semester, the security report has spiked this semester to include 31 incidents since the New Year as of Wednesday, Feb. 28. Last year at this time only 19 inci dents were recorded, suggesting that crime on campus is getting worse.
