The next home game is this Friday September 28* against Mars Hill College at 6:30 p.m. BC football faces tough road by Joseph Chilton IVIanaging Editor Carson-Newman. Catawba. Wingate. Mars Hill. Newberry. Five schools sharing one identical football record. 4-0. It is hard to imagine a worse year for Brevard College to play their first full South Atlantic Conference Schedule. Going into week six of the season, five of the seven full members of the conference are currently undefeated on the gridiron, and four of the schools are ranked in the Division 2 national top 20, according to collegesportsreport. com. One of the two schools that actually does have a blemish on its record, Lenoir-Rhyne, with whom the Tornados will clash this weekend, will be no pushover either, despite their 1-3 record. Two of Lenoir-Rhyne’s three losses have come to Division I opponents, and the Bears are coached by Fred Goldsmith, who was named 1994 National Coach of the Year in a season in which he was the last coach to produce a winning record at perennial ACC doormat Duke. When Brevard re-started its football program in 2006, I seriously doubt that anybody entertained grandeur fantasies of stepping onto the field with a team composed mostly of freshman and immediately being a threat to take the SAC title. The quality of competition in the conference only reinforces the fact that Brevard will undoubtedly endure its growing pains as the program attempts to blossom into the type of powerhouse that is being modeled for them by almost every other school that they will face this season. But there is hope over the horizon. While watching the UNC- South Florida game on ESPN2 last Saturday, the broadcast devoted a small segment of airtime to the short history of the South Florida program. South Florida started its football program from scratch as a Division I-AA school in the 1996 season, with no home stadium and with a singlewide trailer as the football offices. Within four years the Bulls had moved into Division I-A, and on a Saturday afternoon seven years later I watched South Florida, now a member of the powerful Big East whip my beloved UNC Tar Heels 37- 10 on national television, giving the Bulls a win that would propel them into the national top 25 at college football’s highest level. Building a winner at the collegiate level is a long and arduous process, but after watching Brevard thoroughly dismantle a Chowan squad that they barely squeaked by last season, it is apparent that we are on the right track. With time a patience, in a few years people will be talking about the South Atlantic Conference schedule being tough because it includes Brevard.
