BC Football fumbles away opportunity by Joseph Chilton IVIanaging Editor The Brevard football team was plagued by an inability to hold on to the football as they fell 23-12 to Lenoir-Rhyne last Saturday night at Moretz Stadium in Hickory. The Tornados fumbled seven times in the loss, squandering several scoring opportunities. Despite the fumbles, Brevard still held a shm 12-9 lead going into the final three minutes of the game, before Lenoir-Rhyne treated their home crowd of 5,976 to a fourth quarter comeback that thwarted the possibility of BC's first win over a South Atlantic Conference opponent. Brevard got on the scoreboard first when the BC defense recorded a safety that put Brevard up 2-0. Lenoir-Rhyne would respond and rally to score a second quarter touchdown and a third quarter field goal, opening up a 9-2 lead over Brevard. Brevard made a furious third quarter resurgence to take a 12- 9 lead heading into the final quarter. The Tornados only touchdown came when quarterback Trey Wilborn scampered seven yards into the end zone midway through the third quarter. The score punctuated a 50 yard drive that was sustained by two receptions by Jeffrey Adams. Chase Henry booted a 30- yard field goal that gave BC the lead with 1:3 8 to go in the third quarter Brevard managed to hold their narow advantage for most of the fourth quarter, until Lenoir-Rhyne drove 61 yards for a touchdown with 2:31 remaining on the clock, putting the Bears ahead 17-12. On the ensuing kickoff, Brevard fumbled on the return. Lenoir-Rhyne recovered, which lead to a final touchdown that drove the score to 23-12. Freshman quarterback Trey Wilborn led the BC ground attack with 55 yards on 12 carries, while junior running back John Taylor also contributed 47 yards on 11 carries. Despite the fact that BC completed only five passes on the evening, sophomore Jeffrey Adams still turned in an impressive performance with three catches for 29 yards, two of the catches giving BC first downs during their touchdown drive. The BC defense did an exemplary job all night of keeping the Tornados in the game despite their limited offensive production. Juniors Elliott Collins and Josh Durm swarmed the Lenoir-Rhyne ball carriers, recording 13 tackles apiece. The Tornados will return to the gridiron next Saturday when they make another attempt at earning a SAC victory when the travel to Wingate.
