International News: Darfur Town Burned by Carrie Bowen Staff Writer The city of Haskanita in Northern Darfur was burned to the ground last week. The town was taken over two weeks ago by the Sudanese government after the Sept. 29 attack by rebels on an African Union peacekeeping base. The U.N. will not comment on who specifically started the fire. 10 African soldiers died in the attack on the peacekeeping base. The burning of Haskanita began last Wednesday. The market area was looted. There is speculation on whether the burning was done by rebel groups, the Sudanese militia, or the Janjaweed militias. After the attack on the peace keeping base, 15,000 civilians fled the area. The number of wounded and deaths in the attack on Haskanita is unknown. The attack on Haskanita and the attack on the African Union has halted peace talks between the Sudanese government and rebels that was scheduled for this month in Tripoli, Lybia.
