Page 10 Alts & Life The Clarion | Oct. 19, 2007 Concert Review: The Dead Kenny G's a new experience By Zack Harding Arts & Life Editor If a band has a name like “The Dead Kenny G’s” you know they have to be pretty interesting, right? Well, luckily, they certainly are. The Dead Kenny G’s is a three piece composed of saxophonist/keyboardist Skerik, drummer/percussionist Mike Dillon, and bassist/ saxophonist Brad Houser. They rocked the crowd Wednesday the 10*, at the very small, yet very cool Emerald Lounge, which is located on LexingtonAve. inAsheville. Their sound is an improvisation-based jazz mix, with plenty of experimental and ambient flavor thrown in. The trio go from playing jazz standards to funky groove music, to progressive ambience, and at times punk- ... j Skerik at the Emerald Lounge. fueled aggressive rock. Vocals were used sparsely, mostly to add a bit of humor and texture. You know you are seeing a talented bunch of individuals when every band member contributes to great effect on more than one instrument. a Photo by Z. Harding Each member traded the spotlight with some new sound to solo with. Skerik is one beast of sax player, playing traditional jazz with the best of them while also capable of producing avant- garde sounds and riffs that make him a unique force in the music world. His sax morphs from ethereal, echo-laden beauty to wildly distorted electric guitar-like dissonance, often within the same song. Mike D is simply one of the most fun drummers to watch. He bounces and hops all over his kit spastically, often while simultaneously holding down a melody on the vibraphone. Brad Houser, while the most coventional in his playing style, holds his own as a very talented jazz bassist. He keeps a tight rhythm when he should, and shreds it up Jaco-style when the song calls for it. I went into this show being completely unfamiliar with the band’s music, having no idea what to expect. I came out having experienced something totally new, an event that doesn’t happen very often. Medley wins Poetry Slam by Ben Goff News Editor Margaret Medley took first prize in Chiaroscuro’s first ever “Poetry Slam” competition Wednesday night in the Coltrane Underground. Medley surprised the audience with what one student described as “possibly the shitiest poem ever written- pun intended” (one of Medley’s readings was a composition about constipation). Impressive perft)rmances were also delivered by Jacob Richardson and Alysha Andrade, who competed in a tie breaker round for second place, with Richardson emerging as the victor by the slim margin of half a point. This event was sponsored by Student Activities and Chiaroscuro- the Brevard College literary magazine. Chiaroscuro will be accepting submissions of poetry, creative prose, photographs, and other art for this year’s edition until Nov. 20, and all are encouraged to send in their writing to litmag@brevard. edu.
