Page 4 SPORTS The Clarion \ Oct. 26, 2007 XC teams compete in SAC meet By Alycia Andrade and Coach Goglas Contributors SALISBURY, NC - The Brevard College cross country teams competed at the South Atlantic Conference Championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 20. Although the Tornados finishing times as a team did not count toward wiiming the championship, BC still faired well against the strong SAC competition. Junior Alycia Andrade led the Tornados with a top 20 finish, crossing the finish line in 16* place witha 5Ktime of20:44.92. Sophomore Hannah Beck finished in 55* place with a time of 24:43.94, while classmate Meghan Grimes crossed the by Joseph Chilton IVIanaging Editor Last week’s firing of Athletic Director Tom Collins will have no impact on Brevard College’s fulfillment of its Athletic Facility Plan, BC President Drew Van Horn said this week. “These plans were not Mr Collins’ plans, they were the College’s,” said Van Horn following the Brevard- LaGrange football game last Saturday. According to Van Horn, Phase I of the Athletics facilities plan, which includes new bleachers for the gym and a new weight room, has been approved by the Board of Tmstees and will be completed. The timetable for the completion of these projects has not been specified, however finish line at 25:43.92. Upperclassman Kristen Zerressen and Lindsay Sherrill turned in times of28:26.67 and 29:22.75, respectively. Wingate University went on to win the championship meet for the women, while Lenoir- Rhyne and Mars Hill finished second and third, respectively.. For the men, seniors Justin Holstein and Harrison Vicini paced the Tornados on Saturday morning. Holstein turned in a 2 P‘ place finish with his 8Ktime of27:21.12, while Vicini crossed the finish hne at 29:53.33, good enoughfora45* place finish. Junior Brandon Hopkins turned in a time of 30:44.01, placing him in 53'“* place, while sophomore Zach Hazen “I can not accurately speak to a timetable, but I know that the weight room and gym renovations (bleachers) continue to be a major focal point,” said Kim Pate, BC’s Interim Athletic Director According to Pate, the finished in 57* place with his time of31:29.40. Freshmen Tiffen Tapia and Gary Stephenson finished back to back, as Tapia crossed the line with atimeof33:42.35,with Stephenson right on his heels with his time of 33:47.31. Mars Hill went on to win the SAC Championship meet for the men, as they place four individuals in the top-10 overall. Lincoln Memorial finished second, while Wingate edged out Lenoir-Rhyne by one point for third-place. The men’s and women’s cross country teams will host the Brevard College Invitational on Friday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. It is the last meet of the season, so come out and show your love for the runners. College will open up the search for a new AD in Jan., 2008. “The firing should have no impact on our transition as full NCAA and SAC members. Our administration has expressed full commitment to completing the transition,” said Pate. Brevard volleyball takes two hard hits by Amethyst Green Sports Editor Brevard volleyball played two games last weekend taking on SAC foes Carson-Newman and Lincoln Memorial. The Friday game was at Carson-Newman. The tornados fell 3-0. The leaders of the game were sophomore Brooke Seaman with 9 kills, and senior Marquessa Chappell with 6 kills and a hitting percentage of .429. Jami Perry, a junior, had 5 kills, 19 set assists, and 9 digs, and senior Brittany Holliday recorded 14 digs. The Saturday game was at Lincoln Memorial. BC fell 3-1, with game scores of 30-24,19- 30, 28-30, and 20-30. The leaders of that game were sophomore Brooke Seaman with 24 kills and 6 blocks and Brittany Holliday, a senior, with 24 digs.
