The lowdown on the internet slowdown
by Ben Goff
News Editor
The computer problems that
have been frustrating the campus
community are essentially three
separate problems: Internet
slowdowns caused by
exponentially increased campus
use of bandwidth. Network
outages (O drives) caused by a
combination of problems with
software and hardware, and email
problems caused by unavoidable
maintenance to the equipment.
Monday, Beam residence hall
was shut down from the campus
network for about four hours
because multiple people were in
violation of the college Acceptable
Use Policy, resulting in excessive
use of bandwidth that threatened
the entire network.
According to Director of
Information technology Michael
Fuiks there has been a “Severe rash
Revolution on Campus
of violations just in the last few
weeks” that has resulted in many
of the network problems.
Fuiks stated that the recent rash
of network abuse is the worst that
he has ever seen here. Additionally,
campus bandwidth use has grown
exponentially in the past few
years due to an increasing use of
file-sharing software such as I-
tunes, online gaming, and
downloading of music and movies.
