Dec. 7, 2007 \ The Clarion NEWS Page 3 Club Spotlight: Outing Club by Ben Goff News Editor Providing opportunities for all students to experience community adventure has been the goal of the Outing Club for nearly nine years. Through the Outing Club the BC community can experience all of the outdoor recreation opportunities afforded by Pisgah National Forest, DuPont State Forest, and countless other attractions. For almost four years Wednesday nights have been ‘free night’ for students at Brevard Rock Gym in downtown Brevard, thanks to the Outing Club. By paying the cover charge the club has made it possible for experienced climbers and those new to the sport to learn and practice in a safe indoor enviroimient. It has become commonplace for dozens of students to gather at the artificial climbing walls of the rock gym every Wednesday night, building community and friendships. Additionally, the club has sponsored two caving adventures to Worley’s Cave that each packed a 12- passenger van. The club has also sponsored trips to fly through the treetops at night on the zip line course at a nearby camp. Perhaps the most visible effort of the outing club is their involvement with the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour Each spring the Outing Club sponsors and facilitates this event, which typically packs the Porter Center for each of the two nights the tour is in town. The tour, often referred to simply as “Banff,” is a showcase of the best films entered in the Banff Mountain Film Festival held each year in Banff, Canada. The World Tour travels across the world showing films on outdoor sports such as kayaking, climbing, mountain biking and many others, as well as films on mountain cultures, nature, and enviroimiental concerns. The outing club works closely with the cycling team to plan, organize, and run the event that never fails to be a crowd pleaser and fundraiser for the club. This year the club also took part in the Adventure Education Conference held last weekend in the Porter Center The club sponsored the “Croc o’ Gold” competition, a tradition started last year by the outing club at Western Carohna University, who hosted the conference that year The contest consisted of a Tfie ^itt se-me-Ste-r on Tke Witt Wj'pttpWe^^ (\t f tkefincUsfprtke C'Qtle^e^ wu rn(^y\.ent* scavenger hunt across campus and a disc golf tournament. WLEE professors Clyde Carter and Jenny Kafsky won the scavenger hunt. Many students come to Brevard for the outdoor recreation community and resources, others discover them here, but the outing club seeks to facilitate outdoor recreation for all students. The events of the outing club are a way to introduce students who may never have experienced the outdoors to exciting new activities while also building community among outdoor enthusiasts. The outing club is currently developing plans to start friendly intercollegiate competition in outdoor activities with Warren Wilson College and UNC Asheville. The details of this project are still to be determined, but you can expect to hear more from the outing club next semester. The outing club works closely with the new outdoor recreation department headed by Jenna Bales, and as the fledgling outdoor rec. program develops it will undoubtedly offer many exciting possibilities for the outing club. While the role of the club in light of these possibilities is somewhat uncertain, the Outing Club will continue to provide adventure for the campus community in new and exciting ways and encourages everyone to get involved. Early wakeup call in Beam Hall by Rhea Frederick Copy Editor Early Tuesday morning, the residents of Beam Hall were woken by the obnoxious beeping of the fire alarm. “The first night this whole semester that I fell asleep before 2 a.m, I get woken up at 2 a.m. without a thought in my head of what is happening,” freshman Beam resident, Phil Henry commented on the early awakening. So what was all of the commotion about? “The RAs promised us that there wouldn’t be a fire drill in the middle of the night,” I overheard residents saying as they marched out of the building wrapped up in blankets with bare feet. They then realized that Jones’ residents weren’t undergoing the same torture, so they marched over and took cover in Jones lobby. If they didn’t have a fire drill, then why did Beam’s residents have a fire drill? It was later discovered that the so-called fire drill was not a drill at all. Someone had been cooking in the recently-opened kitchen on the floor lobby of Beam, and the smoke from the oven set off the alarm. When asking why the resident was cooking at such a late hour in the night, she replied, “Because we are hungry college students, and every restaurant around here closes before 10 o’clock!” Although the wake up was inconvenient, her baked salmon was delicious. The kitchen will now close before midnight.
