^The Stats Page Gym renovations to take place this summer by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor For those of you still wondering where that new state of the art weight room is, here is the most recent news on the progress of the Athletics Facility Plan. There are some exciting developments on this front, which will only help to improve things here at Brevard College for our student athletes. If you remember back in October, Athletic Director Tom Collins was fired suddenly. There was some concern that the plans for improvements would fall by the wayside. In the October 26, 2007 issue of The Clarion, BC President Drew Van Horn said “These plans were no Mr. Collins’ plans, they were the College’s.” Yet as the months have passed, no news has come out regarding the improvements. That is until now. In an interview this week. Interim Athletics Director Kim Pate confirmed that some of the plans are moving forward. These plans are indeed quite exciting and should provide for a better environment for spectators at BC. “Gym renovation will take place this summer,” said Pate. “Also the weight room plans are moving forward but as of yet we have no specific timetable for this project.” The main project in the gym renovation will be the installation of new bleachers, which are definitely needed. This is a huge step in the right direction for our school. Outside of coaches, one of the most important issues for recruits to any college is the facilities. I can remember back to when I was a young athlete visiting colleges. I can remember one particular college (that won’t be named) that wanted me to play for them. Well, their “training room” was more of a closet. When I was riding with my parents on the way home they asked what I thought and I remember thinking that if I go to this school I hope I don’t get injured. Needless to say I didn’t end up matriculating to that college in the fall, and it was their loss not getting me to represent their school. These are not the only changes that will be coming around on this campus. One of the improvements is an observation deck at the teimis complex. This deck will enable coaches, fans and teammates to watch matches on any court without having to hike around or have their view obstructed by the fences that surround the courts. Another new development is the construction of an electronic sign that will announce upcoming campus athletic events has been approved by the city, and should be in place in time for next fall. The benefit of this is rather simple. Say a person comes to a concert at the Porter Center They drive in and see on the sign that there’s a basketball doubleheader the following night. Well if this person and their significant other decide to come watch the basketball that’s $10.00 to the school right there. With a school as small as ours is, every little bit of money we can get helps, and that will make things better for all of us. Sports are not only of benefit to the athletes who receive scholarships. It gives students a diversion from the studies that can be so stressful in our lives. It gives us a chance to yell, and chant, and simply have a little fun on a weekday night or weekend afternoon. Our athletes here deserve the best, and I am very glad to see that improvements being planned and also becoming realities. Well, that’s all I have for this week. Until next week “so long for just a little while” and remember that as always “I am your champion.” The Clarion \ Apr. 11, 2008 Honor Roll Baseball: Sophomore Shane Galloway (Rosman, NC) pitched a complete game last Simday.
