Despite scoring a season-high 42 points, the
Brevard College football team came up short
in a road game Saturday at Tusculum, losing
55-42. The Tornados were able to rack up 394
yards on the day but were undone by 5 fumbles
which led to three Pioneer touchdowns.
Tusculum scored on their first drive, but the
Tornados were able to answer back right away
with an eight play, 45-yard drive to even the
score at 7-7. After those first couple drives,
the Pioneers outscored the Tornados 21-0 over
the course of the rest of the first quarter In the
second quarter both teams were able to pick up
two touchdowns and headed to the locker room
with the score 42-21 in favor of Tusculum.
The scoring pace slowed down in the third
quarter as both teams could only enter the
end zone once but a shanked Tusculum PA.T
made the score 48-28 entering into the fourth
stanza. In the fourth quarter the Pioneers
added to their lead with a touchdown making
the game 55-28 with less than eight minutes
remaining. However in those last eight minutes
junior running back Desmond Wilson scored
two touchdowns, one on a 12-yard run and
the second on a 3-yard pass from sophomore
quarterback Trey Wilbom, who made his first
start of the year at the position.
The suggestion of Wilborn, who was the
team’s quarterback last season, came from a
unique source according to Head Coach Paul
Hamilton.
“(Former starting quarterback) Kye, my son,
he came to me himself, and he and I realized that
as young as our program is, we needed to run
the option in order to be successful, and Trey is
much more suited to do that.”
The Tornados picked up season highs of 356
yards rushing on the day, and 394 yards of
total offense. Wilbom led the team with 116
yards on 14 carries and two touchdowns (one
rushing and one passing.) Slot back Donald
Hudson was able to rush for two touchdowns
on the day, while junior running back Demond
Wilson and senior running back John Taylor
(making his return from injury also were able
to run for scores.
The Tornados return to the road this weekend
as they take on Mars Hill at 1:30 p.m. and as
usual the game can be heard either on WSQL
1240 AM or on the internet at www.wsqlradio.

After a two week, four game road trip, the
Brevard College volleyball team returned home
last Friday night for the opening two matches
of a three match homestand. Unfortunately fate
was not on the side of the Tornados as they lost
both matches in straight sets.
On Friday night the Tornados took on the
Catawba Indians, and the match started off a
close affair until a 7-1 run made it 17-11 in the
first set. The Tornados fought back to make it
24-21 but one spike later and it was set number
one to the Indians 25-21. The second set was
more of the same as the Indians went on a huge
11-2 run. The Tornados again made a comeback
but it wasn’t enough as they dropped the second
set 25-23.
In the third set, it was tied up at 9-9 until
Catawba took a lead they would not relinquish,
winning the third set 25-19. Junior Chelsea
Trojan and freshman Jordei Osby led the
Tornados the team with 8 kills, and junior Jami
Perry recorded 28 assists on the night. On
the defensive side freshman Lindsey Rogers
gathered 10 digs in the match.
On Saturday afternoon, it was Lenoir-Rhyne
who came to Boshamer Gymnasium. In the
first two sets the Bears came out of the gates
roaring and were able to win by scores of25-16
and 25-14. In the third set the Tornados jumped
to an early lead at 7-3, but gave away that lead.
After being tied at 16-all, the Bears went on a
9-4 streak to close out the match, winning the
final set 25-20.
For the match, junior Brooke Seaman led
the team with nine kills and five blocks, while
senior Jami Perry handed out 21 assists on the
day. The Tornados played on Wednesday night
(after press time), and have two other home
matches in the next week. The first one is this
Saturday against Wingate and the Tornados
also are at home with matches on the 24th and
25th of October against Lincoln Memorial and
Carson-Newman.

against Wingate University. Wingate defeated the Tornados 5-0, dropping
Brevard to 5-9 on the season. The Tornados will play their next home game on
