March 27, 2009 | The Clarion Sports Page 5 Brevard racketeers dominant in SAC Women sweep three conference foes, men take two out of three by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor After both teams went undefeated over their Spring Break trips, the Brevard Col lege Tennis teams returned to conference play this past week. The men, ranked #15 in the Southeast region by the ITA, went 2-1 against South Atlantic Conference foes while the women went 3-0 against their opponents. The Tornados started off their recent stretch with a road match at Catawba Col lege on March 19. The women cruised to a 7-0 win with the final two matches being called off due to rain. The men had to return to Salisbury, North Carolina the following day to finish the match. Despite the delay, the men returned and were able to keep their cool, cruising to an 8-1 win over the Indians. On March 21, the Tornados returned to the friendly confines of home to host Lincoln Memorial University. The men’s match went down to the wire, with a win by fresh man Nate Lyles clinching a 5-4 win over the Railsplitters. The women’s team, led by SAC player of the week Lindsay Shaeffer, had a much easier time with LMU en route to a 9-0 sweep On Tuesday, the Tornados hit the road again for a couple of matches with SAC rival Mars Hill College. After taking two out of three doubles matches, the men lost all six single matches to drop the decision to the Lions 7-2. Shaeffer was named South Atlantic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week ending March 23 by a vote of the Conference's sports information directors. Tough weeic for BC diamond nines by Johnny 'Stats' Lange Sports Editor Tuesday was not the best of days for either the baseball or softball team at Brevard College. The baseball squad gave up six runs in the top of the 10th iiming to lose to North Greenville 10-4 while the softball team was swept in a doubleheader against Newberry College in their South Atlantic Conference openers. The Tornados baseball team held a 4-2 lead entering the eighth inning before the Crusaders ralhed to tie the game. Senior Spencer Linn started the game for the Tor nados and recorded the best performance of his season so far. Over seven innings Liim only gave up three hits and struck out ten, while allowing only two unearned runs. The loss drops the Tornados to 7-19 and 1 -10 in the SAC. They return to action with a three game series at Wingate, opening up on Friday night before playing a double- header on Saturday afternoon. Over at the softball diamond, the Torna dos hoped to open up their SAC season on the right note, but Newberry had different ideas. In the first game the scarlet and grey took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first iiming and were able to hold on for an 8-1 win. In game two Newberry shut out the Tornados 6-0. Juniors Jennifer Gift (7-5) and junior Liz Houser (6-4) threw complete games for the Tornados while classmate Katie Brown went 2-3 in game one, driving in the Tornados only run. The losses drop the Tornados to 13-9 overall and 0-2 in the South Atlantic Con ference.
