April 10,2009 | The Clarion — Opinion Sitting in class on Good Friday? Bleh by Gretchen Allie Staff Writer In the past, Good Friday has traditionally been the day students are given the day off from their studies, to celebrate their reli gion or spend time with their families. However, Brevard College is not following this tradition, and BC students will have class on Good Friday. Why exactly would a church-affiliated college not give students a reli gious holiday off from school? ft seems practical that a college associated with religion would rec ognize Good Friday like most other colleges. Jordan Box, a fresh man, said that not having Good Friday off is a load of crap, and that she’d rather have Friday off than Monday. She said, “I’m Catholic, and Good Friday means something to me”. For the many other reli gious students on campus, not having Good Friday off is frustrating for them and their famihes. BC’s logic behind this is that having Monday off is better because it’s closer to Easter and most elementary, middle, and high schools spring breaks occur that week. But on the other hand, it’s not considerate of those students and faculty who do want to celebrate Good Friday with their families and caimot. Even though class is being held on Good Friday, many teachers will notice that their students are missing because they decided to head home despite the college’s attempt to keep them in the classroom. Perhaps in the future, Brevard College will correct its ways and give Good Friday off. Until then, here’s to skipping class today. Got opinions?
