Page 4 j The Clarion | Sports Blue team prevails in Spring Game by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor The Brevard College football team re turned to the field at Brevard Memorial Stadium for the first time since Nov. 8 to host the second aimual Spring Game. The Blue squad was able to defeat the White squad 17-0. After a scoreless first quarter, the Blue team took a 3-0 lead on a 22-yard field goal by sophomore Chase Henry. Later on in the quarter, junior Xavier Johnson scored from one yard out and the ensuing extra point finished off the scoring for the half with the Blue squad leading 10-0. A 52-yard run by freshman Richard Bush set up a second touchdown by Johnson and closed out the scoring with Blue up 17-0. The story of the day however, was the defense. Redshirt senior Justin Jefferson (who has one year of ehgibility remaining) and junior Charles Chambers both recorded sacks in the scrimmage. Sophomore Mi chael Duff picked off two passes on the day while freshmen Salonik Amos and Michael Gist each grabbed an interception too. “We’re becoming a more mature, expe rienced football team, and a faster team too.” said Head Coach Paul Hamilton. “We have several guys who have the talent to be all-conference players on the defensive side of the ball.” The spring game also featured an offense that showed more passing than fans had seen this past fall. “We want to be a more offensively balanced team and are going to continue to work on this now and when we start in August,” commented Hamilton. Women's tennis advances in SAC tourney by Johnny "Stats" Lange Sports Editor The Brevard College women’s tennis team was able to make history on Tuesday, becoming the first squad at BC to win a South Atlantic Conference tournament match. The Tornados defeated SAC ri val Mars Hill 5-1 to advance to the SAC semifinals. A day after the men’s team dropped a 5-4 decision to Tusculum, the ladies returned to the court to host the Lions. The afternoon began with doubles competition, and the Tornados came out of the gate quickly tak ing two out of three matches. The teams of freshman Lindsay Hostetter and junior Kay ley Duval and juniors Merek Slagle and Sara Douglas were able to pick up wins, while the top team of sophomore Lindsay Shaeffer and junior Kim Dixon dropped their match. As the afternoon moved on to singles action, the Tornados kept rolling. At num ber five singles freshman Jeimifer Nyman rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win and at the number four spot Dixon smashed her foe 6-1, 6-0. At the number two position, after a dif ficult first set, Hostetter settled down and clinched the match for the Tornados with a 7-5, 6-0 victory. With the win clinched the other three singles matches were halted immediately. After the win, Shaeffer said “Both the guys and our team have worked really hard all year It’s an honor to be a part of the success of both teams.” The ladies travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina to take part in the semifinals of the SAC tournament this Friday afternoon against Conference regular season cham pions Tusculum College. The Pioneers defeated BC 5-4 earlier this season. The match begins at 1 p.m. and if the Tornados win they advance to the Championship match this Saturday. Men’s tennis falls to Tusculum in SAC first round photo by Z. Porch The men's tennis team hosted defending South Atlantic Conference champion Tusculum on Monday in the first round of the SAC tennis tournament. The Tornados built a 3-0 lead in doubles action, but faltered during singles play, winning only one match and eventually losing to the Pioneers 5-4. The loss eliminates the Tornados from tournament play.
