A New Student's Guide to Brevard
Being new to an area and not knowing which businesses to trust is tough, so for all the
students new to Brevard, The Clarion has compiled a guide telling you the best places in
town to go for:
by John Climer and Travis Wireback
Managing Editor and Editor in Chief
Bars/Restaurants:
Jordan Street is a prime spot for college
students to rub elbows with locals, and have
some drinks and good food. Plan to spend
some money, and always tip Geoffrey
well. The Square Root is very similar to
Jordan Street, however it is more low-key
and tends not to be open as late as Jordan
Street. Ed Boudreaux’s, as one patron told
a member of the Clarion staff, is the place
to go “when you want to get drunk/laid.”
All of these restaurants/bars check ID’s
late night, so just because there’s grass on
the field, doesn’t mean you can play ball.
Boudreaux’s also makes a mean barbeque

sandwich Dugan’s Pub has recently moved
to their new location, which is about a
block from campus, and is styled after a
traditional Irish Pub. Dugan’s is a good
place for students to have a few drink and
enjoy some typical American and Irish fare,
such as a good burger, fish n’ chips, wrap
or salad, all at a reasonable price.
International Food:
International food is abundant in Bre
vard, with five Mexican restaurants and
five Asian restaurants. Cielito Lindo’s is
quick and gives you the most for what you
pay. It’s also a good spot to drink a Grande
or four.. .plus it’s within walking distance
(hint hint). However, just about everything
is within walking distance in Brevard.
Pescado’s is a good place to get a quick fix
for any Mexican food craving, with fast
service and good food. El Ranchero and
El Chapala are comparable to Cielito’s,
while the Crazy Donkey is very similar to
Pescado’s. We have two Japanese-style
restaurants, Fujiyama’s and Sora. Fuji’s
will fill you up, but might cause you a bit of
gastrointestinal distress once the digestion
process begins. Sora, on the other-hand, has
great sushi without the harmful side-effects
of Fuji’s food, but you should plan to drop
a few bucks. If spicy food is your forte,
then Pad Thai, the newcomer to the B revard
Asian cuisine lineup, will suit you well.
Eateries:
Brevard has a handful of good, locally-
owned eateries as well. If you want a good
cup of coffee or a killer bagel, you should
go across the street to Sunrise Cafe. For
less than $10 you can get an awesome
bagel, foccacia bread sandwich, wrap or
ciimamon-bun. Another place to get an
awesome sandwich for a few bucks is to
go to Julie’s Subs & More. Students that
find themselves with a craving for down-
home cooking should make their way over
to The Clock of Brevard restaurant, which
offers huge helpings of southern favorites,
such as meatloaf or fried chicken, for very
reasonable prices.
Pizza:
Pizza, the staple of college students
nationwide, is available in abundance in
Brevard. The local favorites are Big Mike’s
and Jets Pizza, but there are also a couple of
other national-chain pizzerias. Big Mike’s
is a typical small-town pizza eatery, offer
ing great pizza, subs, wings, salads, and
other Italian-style foods and is a good place
to go off-campus to watch football games,
because they have a good-sized television
and the owner is an avid football follower
Jets Pizza also delivers, so when you have
the late night munchies and no mode of
transportation. Jet’s is always an option.
Shopping:
Unfortunately, the nearest mall, in
Asheville, is no less than 30 miles away.
Luckily for you, however, Brevard boasts
a plethora of outdoor outfitters stores
including Looking Glass Outfitters, Back-
country Outdoors, Headwaters Outfitters
and Diamondbrand Outdoors/The Frugal
Backpacker All are great choices to look
if you need to calm your gear or shopping
needs. Looking Glass Outfitters and Dia
mondbrand Outdoors(located in Fletcher)
are both favorites of many students and are
frequented regularly by WLEE scholars,
because of their helpful and informative
employees, reasonable prices and their
wiUingness to provide students with a small
discount. Brevard also boasts two stellar
bike shops. The Hub and Sycamore cycles,
both of which can help you with all of your
cychng needs.
