The Clarion | Sept. 4, 2009 Sports Football victorious in season opener by Christopher Shirey Staff Writer Excitement was detinitely in the air last Saturday afternoon at five o’ clock in Jack sonville, Florida when the Brevard Tornados went head to head with the Edward Waters’ Tigers to open the 2009 football season. With the opener being on the road anticipa tion was unbearable for the players, coaches, and Brevard fans. When the first whistle blew to start the game, Edward Waters had no idea that the Tornados were about to run all over them with a 51-6 victory, setting a new Tornado football record for points scored in a game. From the get-go the Tornados played with dominant athleticism. Donald Hudson took an interception to the end zone early in the first quarter and Neville Bryce stacked up 192 yards in 14 carries. Richard Bush ranfor 59 yards on four carries and Derek Church ran for two touchdowns for the Tornados. So there was no surprise that the Tornados racked up 398 yards rushing in the game. On the defensive side of the ball, Michael Gist and Stanley Jones had nine tackles. Gist recorded a tackle for loss while Jones sacked the quarterback early in the first half on his way to 2.5 tackles for loss. Between Donald Hudson and Dwayne White both having interceptions and Salthaniel Hall recovering a fumble late in the game, there was no question which team dominated the field. Hudson scored first for the Tornados, stepping in front of a Cesary Wilbom pass and taking it 30 yards to the end zone to put the Tornados up 7 points with 5:21 into the first quarter The next time the Tornados had the ball, Justin Fleming rushed for 13 yards fol lowed by a 65 yard sprint to the end zone by Neville Bryce for 7. The Tornados were up by 13 with 7:07 left in the first quarter In his first game as a Tornado, Bryce recorded 102 yards on 5 carries making his presence known to everyone at the game. The defense took the field and forced a three and out on the Tigers. Church blasted his way through the Tigers’ defense fora 14 yard carry. After receiving the next handoff, he drug three Tigers across the goal line with him to score again before the first quarter concluded, putting Brevard up by 20. Rich ard Ray sacked Cesary Wilbom before the clock ran out on the first quarter In the second quarter, Michael Crumbak- er kept the offense going, running in from four yards out on fourth down, making the score 27-0 with 11:17 left in the first half. While carrying yet another three tigers with him. Church took his second trip to the end zone to put the Tornados up by 34 points with under five minutes left in the half. With 2:14 left in the first half, Jacquez Stevenson caught a pass from a pressured Wilbom and out-ran Austin Williams to the goal line to put the score at 34-6 in favor of Brevard. The Tomados dominated the first half, mounting 297 yards in 29 rashing attempts averaging 10.2 yards a carry. Neville Bryce had 160 yards on 8 carries by himself Brevard scored first in the second half when Chase Henry sent his first field goal of the season through the uprights from 31 yards out with 9:52 left in the third quarter Justin Fleming rashed for 9 yards putting the score at 44-6 while Bryce carried the load on the drive with 27 yards in five carries. Finishing the scoring in the game, senior quarterback Matthew Gaines dove into the end zone from one yard out to put the Toma dos up 51-6 with 5:50 left in the game. Edward Waters tried one last time to get back into the game. Freshman quarterback Percey Freeman scrambled for a first down, but fumbled the ball. Salthaniel Hall for the Tomados recovered it and Gaines kneeled after the snap, miming out the clock and securing Brevard’s first victory on the road in two years. So the Tomados excitedly brought home a win. This week they are in preparation for the Pikeville College Bears. They will travel to Kentucky this Saturday hungry for a 2-0 standing, having beaten the Bears back on September 6th in 2008 at Brevard Memorial Stadium in the 2008 season. Men's soccer loses epic battle by Thomas Lide Staff Writer Brevard College Men’s soccer played an epic and intense match against Pfeiffer College in the rain. Ultimate ly, BC did not win the match, but each player did their best to maintain the lead through out the match. Rain had settled on the field an hour or two before the match began. Pfeiffer Col lege scored the first goal in the middle of the first half However, BC continued to put the pressure on Pfeiffer and eventually Ian Townson scored the first goal through a penalty kick 15 min utes into the second half The grueling battle continued, and BC eventually scored their second goal leading the game 2-1. Just as everyone thought BC would surely win, Pfeiffer College scored the equalizer with just 8 minutes to go in the match, sending the game into overtime. Unfortunately, Pfeiffer College was able to score a goal within the first few seconds of overtime, beating BC 3-2 on Sunday. Even though the loss was a hard one for BC to take, Henri Erti who plays defense for Brevard, is optimistic about the team’s future for this season. He said “It was a mud war, and everyone gave 100% of their effort. There are new freshmen which are a great asset to the team, and I will continue to remain positive through out the rest of the season.” BC men’s soccer will play an away game at UNCAtoday at 4 p.m. and all students are encouraged to support the team.
