April 30, 2010 | The Clarion — News — Final SGA Update: A year in review Page 3 by Meagan Crowson Contributor At the end of the Spring semester when an academic year’s worth of work comes to an end in a tumuhuous squall of projects, tests, and papers there are moments of calm recognizing the great things that the student body has accomphshed outside of the classroom. The Student Government Association, run by students for students, has accomplished a great deal this year. Our outgoing executive board has completely rewritten the SGA Constitution. This has turned the document by which we run our SGA with into a more tluid and comprehensive text and a new mission statement for Senators was developed by the Senate. In addition, a comprehensive handbook was written for incoming senators and executive board members. Through projects conducted by SGA Senators new clocks were hung in MG, t-shirts were made to support our athletic teams, campus enviroimiental causes were supported along with events like Earth Fest and Earth Hour, and Club Advisor Awards were created. Support was given to many clubs on campus, like BC Cinema, BC Greens, BC Old Time Dance, BSU, Business Club, Chmbing Club, Disc Golf, FCA, History Club, Le Club de Francais, Ninpo Taijutsu, Paddling Club, Pastimes History Club, PHAT, Psychology Club, Sesquipedalian Literary Society, and T.M.O.V.E. We had guest speakers like Del Suggs, Kim Pate and SACC, President Van Horn, ARAMARK, Elisa Young by way of BC Greens sprinkled throughout the academic year These speakers educated us on everything from how the college is operated, to how to become a better leader, to social justice issues faced by residents living near coal power plants. Brian Randall our departing VP had this to say about his year in SGA and the upcoming year, “We made progress! I feel that the changes we made created a good foundation for Lucy Matthews and her executive board to foster a strong and SGA community. “We got the structure emplace that we envisioned and have established a good reputation for the SGA among faculty, staff and student leaders. “I have good faith that our vision for a SGA community with a strong capacity for outreach will come to be over the next year Times are changing and you can tell now because we got clocks!” SaraMcDormanour departing President had this recommendation, “If you are passionate about something and the response is ‘no, it’s already been attempted, ’ or ‘no, that will never happen here,’ don’t become jaded and stop there. “Keep going, find a way to make it work or help others to view it from a different angle. Idealism can be a quick way to bum out, so remain reahstic, but DO NOT lose your optimism, hope, or vision for the way things can and should be. “Maintain your integrity for the hopeful, energetic, and inspired Freshmen that first stepped foot on this campus...the true measure of integrity is the ability to walk across the stage at graduation knowing your freshmen-self would be so proud of the person you’ve become.” Finally, what is so important to take away from SGA this is that no matter how impossible a task looks, do what you can because if you have the right intentions things can only become better Most importantly, there are plenty of opportunities to make a difference next year! Become a senator, join a club on campus, use your voice to make a difference because the one fact that holds true across the board for every student is that your college experience is what you make it!
