THE Clarion www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 76, Issue 5 SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 Oct. 1, 2010 Football conference opener: Tornados hungry for revenge By Justin Fleming Staff Writer The Brevard College Tornados finally return home after over a month on the road and they are ready to give their fans a show. Brevard (3-1) will host defending SAC champions and NCAA semifinalist Carson Newman Eagles (2-2). The Eagles embarrassed the Tornados last year in Jefferson City 11-1, causing eight turnovers and returning four of them for touchdowns. This year the Tornados are hungry for revenge! The Tornado offense is looking more powerful than ever, coming off a 69-7 win against Southern Virginia. Last week the Tornadoes racked up over 600 total yards of offense with 519 coming on the ground and set a single-game scoring record, breaking the old record of 51 points set last year against Edward Waters. After that performance Brevard comes into the game as the number one rushing offense in the nation. Carson-Newman is coming off a disappointing loss to UNC Pembroke both of the Eagles losses have came from nationally ranked opponents. The key players of the game for the Tomadoe on offense are quarterback Mike Crumbaker, he did not play in this game last year, will be ready to lead the Tornadoes fierce rushing attack. Thadus Benton who is coming off of a 5 touchdown game last week and all conference selection Neville Bryce will be coming back from injury will both be ready to go for the Tornadoes this week. Freshman sensation Kelvin “The Jef’ Jeter will line up at slot for the Tornadoes Jeter who is by far the smallest back in the conference is coming into the game as the leading rusher in the SAC. Eric Watts will have double duties as tight end and punter Watts is known for his spectacular plays and big punts which make him the nation’s leading punter Senior slot back Xavier Johnson will be questionable this week due to an injury suffered in the game last week. Johnson was the only Tornado to see the end zone against the agles last year Jacob “Grape” Richardson will not be lining up for the Tornadoes for the rest of the season, the senior tom his ACL two weeks ago against JCSU. He will dress out for the last time in a Tornado uniform and will be honored as captain for the game. The Brevard defense will be led by all conference selections Michael Gist and Prince Simunyu. Gist has been quiet so far this season due to his reputation and respect he has gotten from opposing teams but you should expect him to have a big game this week. One player that has emerged on the Tornados defense to fill the shoes of Brevard’s stellar line backing core last year is Feather River College transfer Tray Jenkins. Jenkins is a hard hitting linebacker that can make big plays for the defense. This weekend is the SAC conference opener for both team and the beginning of a championship run for the Tornadoes. Kickoff is Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ashville High School. In this issue...
