What does this mean for fall 2010? “A lot more warm extremes and less cold extremes,” says Gavin Schmidt of NASA. While experts are hesitant to directly link the extreme draughts, floods, fires and temperatures of the summer with global warming, the World Meteorological Organization says that the summer “events fit the international scientists’ projections of ‘extreme weather events due to global warming.”’ If something does not change soon, you may not need your scarves and light jackets in fall. The leaves might not be as crunchy or colorful. You can still eat pumpkin pie, but it might not be the same without the tinge of winter in the air SGA Update: Open forum proposals By Lucy Matthews Contributor The Student Government Association started the year off right with a bang. SGA held an Open Forum on September, 15, 2010 where there were three event proposals brought forth to be considered, as well as a few updates on senator projects. Oslo Medley of Momma’s Kitchen proposed a Potluck Jam which will be held in late October This event will introduce a new tradition being started this year called Fall Fest. Fall Fest will be similar to Spring Fest, but will include a week of events with fall themes including a pumpkin carving contest and a school service project. Additionally, SGA President Lucy Matthews plans to put on a Fall Fest of sorts for the local Boys and Girls Club. Tiffen Tapia, V.P. of the Spanish Club, proposed Latin dance lessons to be held on campus starting soon. The last proposal brought to the open forum was by Wilson Clark, a non-club affiliated member of the student body, wanting to host the premiere of “Eye Trip,” a documentary about skiing produced by Level One. Sophomore Senator Amber Heck updated SGA on her efforts to begin a bike registration on campus and in the local community as well. Bike theft is a big issue in Brevard and Amber has been in constant almost communication with the police department, which supports this program. The next Open Forum is September 29th at 8pm in the Reserve Dining Room. If you want to Step In and Stand Out the SGA is a great way to do it. Come to the Open Forums and let your voice be heard.
