Oct . 1,2010 I The Clarion Page 5 At our doorstep: A closer look at Pisgah National Forest These Hills... By John M. Climer Editor in Chief As everyone is aware, this area of Western North Carolina is a hot-spot for outdoor activities. In light of that, knowing the history of those places and looking at the opportunities they provide users would seem useful and since Pisgah National Forest is literally at our doorstep, / 111 v' iCMmTHniSE it seemed the most logical place to start. Pisgah National Forest covers roughly 510,113 acres of Western North Carolina, with the nearby Pisgah Ranger District encompassing around 157,000 of those acres. The Pisgah Ranger District is one of four different districts in Pisgah National Forest, the others being the Grandfather, Toecane and French Broad districts. Senior Staff Editor in Chief . . . . This act immediately led to the protection of eastern watersheds from any further development or exploitation. In its infancy, Pisgah was a relatively small 87,000 acres surrounding the Biltmore estate that the government purchased from the Vanderbilt family. As Pisgah progressed. Dr Carl Schneck founded the Biltmore Forest School in 1898. The focus of the school was to promote the understanding of forest manag ement through classroom lecture and practical, ,'i hands-on training. Today, the Biltmore Forest School is known as the Cradle of Forestry. Pisgah gained its national forest status in 1916, and in 1925 land in Boone, NC was added into the Pisgah track, subsequently followed by the Chiaroscuro holds fall By David Alexander Copy Editor The fall 2010 edition of the Chiaroscuro was released Wednesday evening at a reception in the Porter Center The reception was held to honor those who both submitted works for the publication and to honor those who worked so hard to make this publication possible. There were readings of several works during the reception most notably were the poetic readings by Jacob Nachman entitled “Damn Nature You Scary!” Harmony Whitt’s piece entitled “The Battle of Colors.” Chelsea Freeman read her poem called “Wasted Life,” and prof Ken Chamlee’s poem, “Malfunction.” Elana Baumarm-Carbrey was the editor of this edition of the Chiaroscuro. Elana had help from Jubal Tiner, the staff advisor, Morgan Sykes, Carole Anne Martinez, and Will Byers. All of the works in the Chiaroscuro are from students and faculty of Brevard College. A new publication of the Chiaroscuro is in the early stages of development and is set to be released sometime in the spring semester The Chiaroscuro is a student based publication and a way for students to have their work published. The Chiaroscuro is a great way to get involved and have your artistic voice recognized on addition of the Unaka land tract in 1936. Scientifically classified as a temperate rain forest, Pisgah is home to an amazing scope of plant and animal life with certain species of flora and fauna that can be found nowhere else in the world. Additionally, the forest hosts over 90 species of birds and 39 species of wild orchids. Pisgah is also home to dozens of waterfalls. Nearby waterfalls include: Looking Glass, Moore Cove, Sliding Rock, High Falls, Whale Back, Turtle Back, Daniel Ridge, Caney Bottom, Slick Rock and Skinny Dip falls. Pisgah offers recreational enthusiasts ample opportunities as well, boasting 1,734 miles of trails for hikers and bikers. Also, there are a nearly limitless number of climbing spots in Pisgah, provided that the rock is dry. Additionally, the Blue Ridge Parkway runs through Pisgah, providing drivers, hikers, bikers and all types of users with an array of beautiful, scenic vistas. We are very privileged to live so closely to such an amazingly diverse and beautiful forest; acknowledge that fact sometime this semester by going out and playing in the woods. 2010 release party campus.
