Jan. 21,2011 | The Clarion Sports Page 5 BC Softball team Adopts-A-Family The Brevard College softball team adopted a family prior to Christmas in 2010. The team sponsored a single mother with two children and along with the Salvation Army, gave them a Christmas to remember The Adopt-A-Family program matches impoverished families with individual or group sponsors to provide for their tangible needs at Christmas. Without the benefit of an adoption, these families would be looking forward to a very grim holiday. Being adopted is designed to be a once or, on very rare occasions, twice in a lifetime event for recipient families. When an Adopt-A-Family match is made, the family information and wish lists are sent to the sponsor The Salvation Army ensures that the family receives the gifts and food during the week before Christmas. Sponsors come in many shapes and sizes. They can be individuals, families, small businesses or large corporations. In this case, the Brevard College softball team was able to reach out and provide a family with gifts and food on Christmas. Women's Basketball loses hard fought battle with Lady Bears By Jermichael Tanner Staff Writer The Brevard College women’s basketball team lost a close game on Saturday that went right down to the wire, with a final score of 70-65. Although the Tornados didn’t suffer that large of a deficit, the emotional loss was far worse. Sophomore guard Micheala Watkins, of Forest City lead the Lady Tornados with 15 points and 3 steals. She was assisted by her teammates as BC poured in 26 points off the bench. It was a decent scoring game for the Lady Tornados. The game was a seesaw for 37 of the 40 minutes played. The lead was no more than 8 points for either team, as they traded baskets and leads for nearly two halves. Guard Sealey Cameron provided the offensive spark for the Lady Bears, scoring a game high 22 points along with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. She found ways to keep the Lady Bears within reach all game, and the rest of her teammates followed her lead. Sophomore guard Asheley Watkins said “effort and composure were the determining factors in the game.” At the end of the first half the Lady Tornados managed to grab a total of 8 rebounds, none of which were from a forward or center The Lady Tornados also had 3 critical turnovers in the final three minutes of the game that lead to an 11 point swing for Lenoir-Rhyne. The Lady Tornados took the loss to heart because it was their efforts and mistakes that put them in position to win or lose the game, but they won’t hang their heads. The Lady Tornados plan to get back to their winning ways. Sophomore guard Micheala Watkins said, “We need to regain composure and focus.” BC's Josh Roper named SAC Player of the Week Josh Roper has been named the South Atlantic Conference men's basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 17.
