As ordered by the Fire Marshall, South Village residence halls have been closed to students since a lightning strike damaged the fire alarm system in the dormitories just after 10 a.m. According to Director of Facilities, Joseph Brown, the bolt struck a tree between South Villages and Boshamer Gymnasium, at which point electrical charge traveled through the tree’s root system damaging HVAC units and fire panels in the South Villages. The strike damaged electrical infrastructure in South Village 2 most extensively according to maintenance staff Residents of South 2 have been told to vacate for the remainder of the semester South Villages 2 and 8 also sustained water damage due to sprinkler systems being activated by the smoke. North Village 8 sustained some flooding due to a damaged waterline, said Stan Jacobsen, Director of Safety and Risk Management Other residents of South Village residents “will not yet be able to return to their rooms until the fire alarm system has been repaired,” said Director of Security and Student Housing, Jason Djuren in an e-mail to the campus, Thursday. Fire alarm technicians are working diligently to get the residence halls affected back online.
