The Clarion www.brevard.edu/clarion Volume 77, Issue 17 Web Edition SERVING BREVARD COLLEGE SINCE 1935 Feb. 3, 2012 Fine Arts Gala at the Porter Center By Olivia Fawcett staff Writer The second annual “Love the Arts” fine arts gala will be held tomorrow in the Porter Center at 6:30 p.m. the, ^arts FIMBARTS GALA This black tie optional gala is being hosted and sponsored by both the Brevard College Board of Visitors with support from the College’s Friends of the Fine Arts. The gala will feature student performances, an art exhibition gallery, and a sneak peek at the upcoming musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” There will also be a silent auction, plenty of fine wine and of course dancing throughout the evening. As Olivia Willie, a sophomore music education major put it, “A night of badassery in every art: visual. musical, and theatrical!” Only the best of the best are chosen for this event, Willie says. This will be a wonderful opportunity not only for the older members of the Brevard community, but for the students, especially those in the fine arts themselves. Although it costs S25 to attend the Gala, the money goes straight to the fine arts. Kaitlyn Wood, a senior and a theater major says that “We have to raise money and appreciation for the arts here at Brevard College.” So if you need to add a little culture to your Saturday night, and are willing to donate your money to the fine arts department, stop by the financial office in Dunham and pick up your ticket by 4 p.m. Brevard psyched for Super Bowl Party By Josh Smith staff Writer Super Bowl Sunday is coming upon us once again. This Sunday the Underground will be the venue for the Super Bowl party where football fans and hilarious commercial fans will gather to enjoy themselves with food and games. Yes is the answer for all those who are wondering if there will be snacks! The party organizers are Rachel Barrow, Dee Smith, Liz Birolin, Maggie Whitman, Megan Walters have planned to have pigs in a blanket, mini pepperoni calzones, smoke chicken Cornucopia quesadilla, chicken fingers with honey mustard and BBQ sauce and plenty other tasty foods. Also along with the snacks there will be desserts plus a Giants cake and Patriots cake. This year’s Super Bowl matchup is between the Giants of New York and the New England Patriots. The New York Giants finished the regular season with a record of 9-7 and pushed past the Falcons, Packers, and San Francisco in this year’s NFC playoffs to earn their spot in the Super Bowl. The New England Patriots finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and pushed past the Broncos and the Ravens to earn their spot. The Patriots will be showing that it is not necessary for a team to have a great defense to win Super Bowls. They have a high-powered offense that is 3rd with 32 points per game, 2nd with 428 yards per game, but a defense that ranks 31 st (next to last) for giving up 411 yards per game this year. The Giants have an offense that is based on passing the ball. They rank 5th overall with 295 pass yards per game and their rushing is dead last at only 89 yards per game. Their defense is slightly better than the Patriots ranking 27th allowing 376 yards per game. This is the same Super Bowl matchup of four years ago when Giants pulled off and upset against the heavily favored New England Patriots. This will be time to get revenge for the loss they took at the hands of the Giants in 2008.
