Nov. 9, 2012 I The Clarion Sports Page 11 Men's basketball begins season The end has arrived final game of the season tomorrow By Jackson Vause StaffWritei^_ The Brevard Men’s Basketball season opened play on Monday with an exhibition game against the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville. Brevard lost, but made a good showing against the D-1 school. Brevard took an early lead by hitting a three point shot to open the game. After that, however, Brevard looked uneasy on the court, and couldn’t get a shot to fall while UNCA got hot and came on strong to take a 30-12 lead at the ten minute mark. Here Coach Burgess called a time-out, after which Brevard made a small run to bring the score to 39-21 with six minutes left in the half. Brevard kept this streak for a short while longer as Nicholas Dionisio came in and drained two three-pointers, but unfortunately for the Tornadoes, UNCA was consistent at the free throw line and entered the locker room at half time leading 51-31. Brevard came out of half time aggressively, and three pointers from Matthew Ward and Gerel Simmons looked as if they might spark the Tornado offense. This came to no avail however as a dunk from UNCA’s Roberts swung the momentum once again in the Bulldogs’ favor. UNCA took control of the game from this point and sparked by to more dunks from Cunningham went on to win the game 91-60. Brevard remained upbeat after the game however, saying that they felt that it gave them a good feel for their strengths and weaknesses coming into the season, and also that taking on a D-1 school would prepare them and make them better for the rest of the season. The Tornadoes will begin their official season tonight against Columbus State University in Americus, GA. Freshman Alex Moe fights to block a rival Bulldog in their season opener. Lady Tornados fall to Bears in home finale By Chantel Azevedo Sports Editor The Brevard College volleyball team underwent a tough 3-1 loss to the Lenoir- Rhyne Bears in their final home match of the 2012 season in Boshamer Gymnasium last Tuesday night, 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11. The lady Tornados were able to get ahead of the Bears in the first set of the match after rallying from an 11-6 deficit to open the match. The Tornados tied the Bears at 13-13 and later 16-16 before finally gaining a solid lead in the set. The Lenoir Rhyne Bears took control over the game following the Brevard’s first set, winning each of the next three sets. The Tornados will visit Tusculum College today to take on the Pioneers at Pioneer Arena on Friday, November 9 at 7 p.m. Lenoir- Rhyne, meanwhile, will head to Eleazer Arena to take on the Lions of Mars Hill today at 7 p.m. By Drevius Sizemore StaffVVritei^^^^_ The Tornados final football game is here and will be played against the Newberry Wolves tomorrow at Brevard. The Newberry Wolves record is (5 - 5) and the Brevard Tornados record stands as (1-9), but the win to loss ratio will mean nothing going into this game. Brevard plans to end their season with a bang and to play fierce and intense football; they will end their season with nothing less than a win. This game is set to be a very exciting game because this game will provide closure for the Brevard Tornadoes. Brevard should exert many examples of emotion packed plays throughout this game, due to it being the last game for the seniors of Brevard College. The Seniors that will be playing their last game as Tornados are Aaron Reese, Anthony Cestrone, Chris Jones, C.J Wilson, Eric Watts, Derek Church, Phillip Curcio, Dusty Holder, Jordan Bookheart, Sean Lampkin, and Marvin Lawson. All of those players listed will have to play hard because this is the last game of their collegiate career, and to go out with a win would be the best way to end it. Most players feel that the season just flew by, and that it feels strange approaching their last game, but have nothing but a win embedded in their brain. They believe that despite all the tough and hard times they have experienced that to end it with a win would be the perfect ending. Brevard has had a rough season but they never gave up and continued to have a positive outlook on their future as a collegiate football program. This game will do nothing but bring upon closure to their season and at the same time spark a fire to make them realize that they have a lot of work to do as a team and that all it takes is time and commitment. The Tornados will step on to the field with their heads up and look their opponents in the eyes and fight until the game is over and ending in their favor, with Brevard College bringing home a win.
