Scholarship to honor BC 'legend'
Chick and Ruth Martin Scholarship pays homage to
former athletic director, department chair, and coach
An anonymous donor has established an
endowed scholarship at Brevard College in
honor of Chick and Ruth Martin.
The scholarship will be used to provide
financial support to student-athletes at the
College.
Martin is a living legend of Brevard Col
lege. He started at Brevard College in 1955
and, until 1972, ran a program of excellence
as athletic director, chairman of the depart
ment of health and physical education and
head coach of the men’s basketball team.
Along the way, Martin distin
guished himself and Brevard
College as director of the Na
tional Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) for 10
years and president of the West
ern North Carolinas Junior Col
lege Athletic Association.
Martin’s trail of successes
includes being the all-time
winningest coach in the history
of Brevard College basketball,
with 240 wins and four confer
ence championship titles. Two
of his basketball teams quali
fied for the NJCAA National
Tournament in Kansas, a first
for Brevard College. Martin
is a member of the Western
North Carolina Sports Hall of
Fame Committee, the Brevard
College Alumni Honor Roll as
well as the Brevard College
Athletics Hall of Fame.
In 2010, the Brevard College
Athletics Department hosted
the Chick Martin Tribute—
a celebration of the legacy
of Chick Martin. The event
launched the Chick Martin
Challenge, which led to a drive
for the funding of the Chick
Martin Training Center. Earlier
this year, the College named
the Boshamer Gymnasium
floor in honor of Martin.
The College made the schol
arship announcement to the Martins at a
special dinner with friends and colleagues
at the President's Home. “Chick and Ruth
were surprised, delighted and very moved by
the creation of this scholarship,” said Susan
Cothem, vice president for advancement at
Brevard College.
“Working with donors to establish en
dowed scholarships is always one of the most
meaningful things that I do,” Cothem said.
“However, working with the two anonymous
donors, with whom I have a very close re
lationship, to endow a scholarship in honor
of Chick and Ruth Martin was so incredibly
special. The Martins have such a long history
at Brevard College, and are so widely loved
and respected, that this is a most fitting honor
for them.”
Anyone wishing to donate to the schol
arship may do so. Gifts may be made to:
