Affluenza survey results By Monica Gibson Contributing Writer The time that it takes to construct a survey, get it approved, and present it to other people to take is a lot more than we expected; that’s what we, the BCE 411 class, BC & Beyond, discovered We began the class by reading the book Affluenza by John de Graaf, a book about the growing “need” for material gain in society today. It compares this need to a disease that strains relationships, society, and the world. There is a survey in the book that tells whether you have been infected. Our group decided to tweak the survey to fit the lives of college students and distribute it. We wanted to know whether the BC student community was infected with this disease. However, we didn’t know that we had to have the survey read and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Only then, for legal reasons could we could hand it out and gather data. We didn’t realize this until after we had compiled 100 surveys. We had to shred our data and start over. It took us weeks to meet the criteria for the informed consent criteria and get the survey approved. Once we did this, (2 weeks late might I add) we handed out the surveys. We wanted the students to be completely unbiased, so we didn’t put a key on the surveys. By the time we were finished, we had conducted 88 surveys and received data from 88 very different people. These ranges were keyed differently: “0-25 - You have no serious signs of Affluenza, keep reading to stay healthy. 26-50 - you are already infected, keep reading to boost your immune system. 51-75 - Your temperature is rising quickly, take two aspirin and read the next chapters very carefully. 76-100 - You’ve got Affluenza big time! See the doctor, reread the whole book, and take appropriate actions immediately. You may be contagious; there is no time to lose!” The ages that we surveyed ranged from 18 to 33. 21 was the average age, but most of our participants were 18. The majority, 47 students, scored in the 26-50 point range. 36 scored in the 0-25 range, 5 scored in the 51-75 range and 0 people placed in the 76-100 category. According to our results, Brevard College is already infected. We are consumed with materialism, but we can still be healed. As a class, we highly recommend this eye-opening book to everyone. We never realized just how much everything we take for granted can affect the world. THE Clarion Senior Staff Editor in Chief . Managing Editor Copy Editor. . . Opinion Arts & Life . . .
