Welcome Back. Issue!. Aug. 30, 2013 701 reasons to celebrate With record-breaking enrollment and new renovations, campus is thriving By Patrick G. Veilleux staff Writer B revard College has undergone multiple changes since Spring Semester. Chief among them are the largest incoming class of 300 new students from 23 different states and 12 foreign countries, and the aesthetic, character defining changes to the interior of Myers Dining Hall. There are still many other less obvious changes that members of the BC community should be made aware of Campus Life has hired eight more Resident Assistants than last year in response to the rise in students. The increase in R.A.s will allow Campus Life to focus more on community building among students than in the past. BC is using a new car parking policy. Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. students should have their cars parked in their residence hall’s designated parking area. The parking stickers provided by Campus Security have labeled which residence hall the students are staying in, so they will be able to confirm who belongs where. After 5 p.m. students will be able to park anywhere on campus. This policy was instituted to insure that commuter students, staff and faculty would have parking spaces when they come in the morning. Dean of Students Deborah D’Anna said, “We have allowed a two week grace period, but as of today we will be enforcing those time frames,” she added, “We want to make sure that commuters have a place to park, and we also want this to be a walking campus.” Reverend Christine Maddox is BC’s new campus minister. Starting next week she will be on campus 20 hours a week. Her office will be Stamey Wellness Center, between Jones Residence Hall and Dunham Auditorium. D’Anna said, “Once we have finalized when her hours will be, we will send that out to students. She fell out of the sky to us, and I think she will fill a much needed role on campus.” The Recreation Center that was in Boshamer Gym has been moved to the basement of Jones Residence Hall, and it will open Monday, Sept. 2. Video game consoles will be added to the Rec. room in the near future- for the time being it has Pool and Ping Pong tables. The grill in Coltrane Underground has had its menu expanded, received aesthetic changes and D’Anna has said there will be expanded hours in the near future: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays. She added, “It will be a couple of weeks before we begin running from 9-2, but that’s the plan.” In addition: by the start of the spring semester. Beam, Jones and Green Residence Halls will be outfitted with Card Swipe Entry systems. There will be a celebration for our record- breaking enrollment during a special campus community gathering on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 12:30 p.m. at Robbins Plaza (the green space in front of Myers Dining Hall).
