Oct. 11,2013 I The Clarion Arts & Life Page 3 It's going to rock By Olivia Fawcett Managing Editor T he Brevard College rock climbers have yet another reason to get out and go climbing. On Monday, Oct. 10, SGA approved the request made by seniors Travis Gray, Jake Parker, and Zach Baker to reinstate the Climbing Club. According to their Facebook page, the club is “an independent group of highly motivated individuals who share a passion for rock climbing of all types.” They are open to all Brevard College students interested in learning and sharing anything climbing. “It’s going to rock,” said Parker. The climbing team staff advisor will be Cameron Austin, Brevard College Assistant Professor of Information Technology and Business and Organizational Leadership. Last spring, Austin bought and reopened the Brevard Rock Gym. With a little help from Gray, who created the routes and the Brevard College Outing Club, Austin has been able to maintain the gym, host free climb night, and provide a practice area for the new club. Brevard College Climbing Club is open to all types of climbers with varying skill levels ranging from sponsored climbers to novices and students who want to fine tune their skills and gain more experience. “Students who are interested in joining should check out the Facebook page and register for the Collegiate Climbing Series, which costs $35, and come to the next meeting on Oct. 24,” said Baker. f f , Local musician attracts attention By Olivia Fawcett Mana2in2_Editoj_ A lthough Mountain Song Festival was a month ago, Andy Ferrell is another local musician with a love for traditional folk style with a modern sound. This up and coming performer is sure to catch the attention of both folk and bluegrass lovers throughout western North Carolina. Ferrell is a singer, songwriter, and guitar picker born and raised in Boone, North Carolina. He will perform this Tuesday at The One Stop Deli and Bar in Asheville at 8 p.m. with upright bassist Zach Smith. Ferrell received his inspiration from his father, who helped him learn how to play the guitar. “My dad showed me all of the music that I now love and am influenced by,” says Ferrell. Ferrell draws his inspiration from musical artists like Townes Van Zandt and Doc Watson, performers who are known for their flatpicking acoustic sounds with the accompaniment of fiddles, stand up basses, and the occasional harmonica. Ferrell also enjoys reading. Some of his favorite authors include John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac and Kurt Vonnegut. He also enjoys traveling and meeting people, which contributes to his long term goal of becoming a traveling musician. “I want to bring people the music that I create and love in order to not only bring them enjoyment and entertainment, but also give them a taste of where I come from and show them a part of our culture and heritage here in North Carolina,” says Ferrell. ^ 0)= 0) o S = 5-“ f"> c O c ■D ul- ® ^ fl> = ■0 m-* U o5£ c= >'>‘2 ^ c re m 2 o = £ > ro 2 a> « g «)“ i-n*; o Thea Dunn Fight, fight, fight by Andrew Gunnin
