Oct. 11,2013 I The Clarion Sports Page 7 Introducing new affairs on the bike By Kody Adams staff Writer Our neighbors, Mars Hill College hosted this past weekend’s cycling race in Asheville. The day began with the short track, a short endure course that last up to 30 minutes. The music raining over the pit area from Brevard’s trailer helped start the weekend right with the men’s C race and Brevard’s first victory of the weekend went to Regis Bryer with teammate Bennet Mccoy snagging fourth. Brevard’s Courtney Carter kept the juices flowing representing the Brevard College women’s B team and grabbing first place. Blake Stephenson grabbed a well-deserved third place with Dillon Brown taking sixth in men’s B. Erica Zaveta came out swinging in women’s A short track and snagged another first for Brevard on the short track with teammate Sarah Hill coming in third. Men’s A racer Zachary Valdez stayed up at the front battling the whole time and was rewarded with a second place finish. Lewis Gaffney and Cypress Gorry kept the charge of their teammate going taking fourth and fifth place. After the short track was a new event for most of the Brevard cycling team called Team Relay, an event where one teammate attacks the short track course for a lap before they hand it off to another. Brevard had two squads going into this event. Team A was built of Lewis Gaffney, Erica Zaveta, and Zachary Valdez. Team B consisted of Sarah Hill, Cypress Gorry, and Spencer Lowden. The event was something to behold with teams all out sprinting the short track course. The groups of opponents were quite close until Erica Zaveta was on the last lap and in a battle with Cumberland University. The comer before the finish line Zaveta was in the lead and held her line when the Cumberland rider tried to pass. He went over the bars of his bike and crashed leaving Zaveta’s and team A’s last sprint to be the final stamp on the event. With team A taking the victory, team B was right behind and ended up grabbing second. Saturday’s last event was Super D, a mix of descending skills and endurance. Regis Bryer and Michael Pursley started the event right taking home second and third in the men’s C category. Keith Marek the sole men’s B representative on the course, took second in the Super D. Sarah Hill and Erica Zaveta also gave their stamp of approval to the course grabbing first and second in the women’s A Category. Dan Ennis took the course continuing his good mountain bike season and taking home the victory in men’s A. Mac Banner and Blake Stephenson weren’t far behind their teammate grabbing fourth and fifth in the men’s A category. Sunday came and the event of the day was Cross Country, distance based events were riders navigate around a long course, 15 to 30 miles, seeing who can do it the fastest. Regis Bryer gained another 1st for his shelf in men’s C category. Courtney Carter kept her good vibes going snagging second place in the women’s B category. Dillon Brown placed sixth in the men’s B category. Erica Zaveta wanted to make the weekend her own and did just that receiving her third first place win at Mars Hill with the Cross Country event in women’s A. Sarah Hill grabbed a respectable fourteenth place in Cross Country. Men’s A was the last race in the Cross Country event and Zachary Valdez, Cypress Gorry, and Lewis Gaffney came out ready to go taking second, third, and fourth for Brevard. We head into a weekend off but then there is Conference Championships and it is being held at Brevard’s home track in Adventure Village. Come out during October 19 and 20 to help support Brevard’s cycling team. Blake Stephenson THE Clarion Ray Dangelmaier Editor in Chief . . Managing Editor . Copy Editor. . . .
