Cyclo-cross is a mix of on road bicycle racing and off road bicycle racing with a few sand traps and barriers (that you have to jump over) thrown together to create a fast paced bicycle event. January 10th held the first race that Brevard College cycling team would participate in, Team Relay. Out of the members that race on the Championship team, four (two men and two women) are chosen to race the course one at a time. Every lap a different teammates races the course. After four laps the team in the lead takes the win. “The wind was the biggest concern as far as weather is concerned but the ground kept dry enough to have good races,” Brandon Miiet (Senior and Mechanic for the team) told me. Lewis Gaffney, a senior with quite a bit of racing experience started for Brevard. Allison Arensman, a new member on Brevard’s squad took over for Gaffney, then Zachary Valdez, a sophomore had a chance to take the course by storm followed by Erica Zaveta (senior) who took over for the final lap. The Relay team took 1st place in the division 2 (D2) Collegiate race, but because D1 and D2 raced at the same time, they were able to see how they would stack up against the division 1 competitors. The Relay team would have finished 3rd if in Dl, right behind Marian University and Fort Lewis College making this race a statement towards their competitors that they were ready. This race set the tone for the rest of the weekend. Saturday, January 11 was the chance for the Brevard women to take the on the cyclo-cross course. Christina Birch riding for Massachusetts Institute of Technology would take 1 st place, but the Brevard women wouldn’t be far behind. Erica Zaveta (Senior) would end her last Collegiate National Championship right with grabbing 2nd place followed by newcomer Allison Arensman (Sophomore), who took See 'Cyclo-champs,' page 6 NAACP-NC president to speak on campus Brevard will welcome Rev. Dr. William Barber, president of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, as the featured speaker at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22 at the Brevard College Porter Center. Rev. Barber is the honored guest of Transylvanians Forward Together, a local outgrowth of the Moral Mondays movement that took the state by storm last summer when the North Carolina State legislature passed a body of legislation that the NAACP considers discriminatory and unjust. Rev. Barber has gained national recognition for his leadership of the Moral Mondays movement, which led to the arrest of more than 900 protestors (including Rev. Barber) at the state capital in Raleigh last summer. He is expected to address the legislature’s decision to reject federally funded expansion of the Medicaid program affecting 500,000 poor and disabled North Carolinians. Rev. Barber has also strongly criticized the reduction of unemployment benefits for See 'Rev. Barber,' page 2 Rev. Dr. William Barber
