as a group by making tough decisions and

others for extended periods of time.
The experiences and relationships developed
during the immersion semester are what make
EC’s WLEE program unique from Outdoor
Education programs at other institutes. The
best thing about Immersion is that each group
is totally different every semester.
Their personalities, their relational
development, and their procedures and
goals vary from semester to semester. I am
here to inform the general student body of
Brevard College about what really goes
down during the immersion semester by
following the progression of this semester’s
team. I will specifically focus on their 21 -day
expedition.
Their adventure began with a bang at the
beginning of the semester as they attended a
ten-day Wilderness First Responder (WFR)
course held on campus.

On Tuesday March 11, the Sierra Club’s
Winston-Salem Group Vice Chair and NC
Sierra Student Coalition Coordinator, Avery
Locklear, 19, came to speak to Brevard
College students to propose a Sierra Student
Coalition group at Brevard College.
After northern California, North Carolina
has the second most active Sierra Club
chapter in the United States, with 70 to 80
thousand members statewide.
Locklear has volunteered with Sierra Club
since March 2013. By May she was the
Student Coalition leader of her local group,
and by June she was voted in as the Vice
Chair. Locklear is the youngest in her chapter
by many years and has realized this trend of
local groups that lack young people. She has
plans to change that.
Sponsored by the Sierra Club Winston-
Salem group, she has been traveling the
Southeast for various training conferences.
She has received life changing skills and

T his semester, eight students, most of
who have transferred into Brevard
College specifically for the Wilderness
Leadership and Experiential Education
(WLEE) program, have committed their full
semester into immersing themselves into the
wilderness and group development.
With many different backgrounds and
experience levels, this group has and will
continue to grow throughout the semester.
Immersion, as some of you may know, is a
semester that WLEE students apply for after
achieving certain credit requirements.
Completion is a requirement of the major.
Throughout the semester, students are
“immersed” in various outdoor activities
including whitewater paddling, sea kayaking,
rock climbing, backpacking, mountain biking,
wilderness medicine, backcountry cooking,
and occasionally caving.
Not only do the WLEE students “play” in the
woods, but they also develop their leadership
skills with extensive and constructive
