New SGA board
welcomes BC students
By Jordan Laws

Despite rain, exhaustion from classes starting,
and an illusionist performing soon after, atten
dance at the Student Government Association
introduction meeting Aug. 19 wasn’t bad.
Approximately 18 students attended the in
formational SGA meeting, not including the
Executive Board. Student body President, Steve
Olson (Senior), Vice President Adrian Isa (Junior),
Speaker of the Clubs, Elena Raygoza (Junior),
and Secretary Alex Laifer (Sophmore) began the
meeting by introducing themselves; then asked
everyone around the room to do the same. It was
a good exercise to dissemble the unfamiliarity
between students and everyone seemed comfort
able with it because they’ve done this in all of
their classes.
After the introductions, Raygoza took the helm
and steered the conversation towards clubs. Clubs
are a good way to bring people who share similar
passions together and if you want to start a club,
or were just considering it, contact Raygoza at
raygozea@brevard.edu. She will give you all
the details you need. She will provide a form to
complete that you will have to turn it in by the
next SGA meeting on Sept. 2 at 8 p.m.
To start a club you also have to get 10 people to
support the club. After you gamer support from
your classmates you need to make a proposal
that’s submitted to SGA. How do you make a
proposal? That’s a good question. It wasn’t ex
plained. You’ll have to contact Raygoza to find
out more about proposals.
Tomorrow from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. there will
be a club fair in front of the Caf if you want to
align yourself with a particular club or if you just
want to see what students at BC are vehement
about. If you want to become a member of a club,
pick up an application from the club you want to
join, fill it out and return it. There will be cake,
pie and (maybe) an eating contest of some kind.
It sounds like it will be fun!
If a club needs a table or tables for the club fair,
contact SGA and they’ll see what they can do for
you. There will be a 10-15 minute time block
where clubs will have access to a microphone and
speaker system to introduce their club to students.
There will also be SGA t-shirts at the club fair and
more can be ordered if needed.
After Raygoza, Isa described the roles of a BC
senator and the process to become one.
First, you have to fill out an application and
submit it to Isa at isaga@brevard.edu; second, if
the application is approved, you must talk to Deb
D’Anna. If everything goes well and you become
a senator there are a couple of responsibilities
you will have: you become a link between SGA
and the student body so you must communicate
the ideas being discussed to everyone; you have
to listen to students’ concerns and report them
to SGA, you must voice fellow students’ ideas
to SGA; and you have to attend SGA meetings.
There are some circumstances that will cause
a student to lose their position as a senator and
these are: if they’re on academic probation, have
disciplinary actions taken against them, if their
GPA is less than 2.0, and if they miss more than
three SGA meetings.
Olson wrapped up the night by discussing some
of the new committees that are in the process of
developing direction and purpose.
Some of Olson’s goals this year are to break up
certain committees, build a garden on campus,
develop electric charging stations, and hold town
hall meeting-style public forums for everyone to
voice their opinions. Building the garden has sup
port from an outside investor as well as faculty on
campus; the electric charging stations fits in the
divestment and green initiative of BC but there’s
isn’t any information about it yet; and the town
hall meetings would be once a month, would
include faculty, community members, students
and possibly a musical act. More information
about these committees will be available at the
following SGA meetings.
If you want to start a committee it’s best to do
so at the beginning of the year so you can get
approved and start working towards something
you’re excited about.
The first official SGA meeting will clarify sena
tor structure and committee longevity. There’s
also the issue of electing a Treasurer for the
Executive board. The position needs to be filled.
If you haven’t received an email from Olson yet,
look out for one. It will explain the procedure for
electing the Treasurer or running for Treasurer; no
more information is available at this time.
If the informational meeting was any indication,
this year looks to be exciting and interesting.
SGA is focusing more on student involvement
and through their newest initiatives they might
succeed.

The Cannon
Foundation:
Funding campus
projects
By Emma Moore
staff Writer
In Septemb 2014, BC received funding from the
Cannon Foundation to renovate Jones Residence
Hall. The Cannon Foundation is a charitable orga
nization based in Concord, N.C. The organization
was founded by Charles A. Cannon to share his
philanthropic legacy.
The foundation is part of the Cannon Charitable
Interests, which include the foundation and three
separate charitable trusts. Charles A. Cannon
was the President and Chairman of Cannon Mills
Company. Cannon established the Charitable In
terests to carry on the works that he was interested
in throughout his lifetime.
The Foundation funds healthcare, higher edu
cation, human services, and community related
things. They try to keep their funding limited to
organizations that they believe are worthy that are
predominantly located in NC.
In order for BC to receive funding from the
Cannon Foundation, our Office of Philanthropic
Development had to submit a competitive pro
posal requesting funds. “The Foundation reeeives
more funding requests each year than it can fund,
so the requests are competitive,’’ explains Susan
