Caf rules
Inconsistent Caf policies
confuse students and staff alike
By Alex Perri
staff Writer
Under new management, the Caf has under
gone some changes to its food options, staff
members, and policies this year, but there
seems to be some confusion as to what these
new policies actually are.
In recent weeks student have taken to Yik
Yak, a popular social media app that sparked
controversy at BC last year. The Clarion
covered this debate in our Oct. 8, 2014 issue.
Students used the app to voice complaints about
Caf staff members stopping them from taking
food out of the Caf
Urban dictionary defines Yik Yak as, “A mo
bile app college kids use to anonymously talk
[bad] and post witty things to people nearby.”
Essentially, the app is like an anonymous, loca
tion oriented, twitter feed.
In one Yak, a student complained of being
stopped from taking cafeteria food to his sick
roommate. Another student complained about
being forbidden to take more than one cookie
outside of the cafeteria. Students have also
reported being stopped for taking a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich to-go in-between
classes, which admittedly is offered in Coltrane
at lunch, or taking fruit to their room.
Many of us are left wondering: what exactly
are the Caf rules? According to BC Cafeteria
Chef in charge “Sarj,” the rules about what
students are allowed to carry outside of the caf
eteria are as follows: a beverage in a travel mug
or water bottle, a piece of fruit, an ice cream
cone, or a desert. “We just are asking students
to be reasonable” Sarj said in an interview.
“Students talk. If a student has a sick room
mate and wants to take a meal to them all we
ask is for them to communicate with us. We are
reasonable people” Sarj said. He also added
that the he would like to strongly encourage stu
dents to use the Coltrane Grill meal exchange
option for those who are have class through
lunch hours.
When speaking with another Caf employee,
who preferred to remain unnamed, the rules
seem to be far more uncertain.
“The truth is, they change every day,” the
employee said. “A piece of fruit, maybe two
here or there, or some cookies? That’s fine.
But if you have three apples, six oranges, and
a bunch of bananas, that’s not a snack that’s a
fruit salad!”
There is no specific policy dictated to em
ployees about what or how much food exactly
a student can take out of the cafeteria. One day
a student will get “yelled” at for taking more
than one cookie with them to class, while other
days a student might slip out with an entire
pocketful without being stopped.
While it appears that the lack of consistent
enforcement of any policy is causing confu
sion for students and employees alike, the Caf
workers also don’t want to remain obstinate to
changing circumstances.
“We want to be reasonable with the students,
and we want the students to be reasonable with
us, but situations can change,” said another
Caf employee. “ If I see a student that I know
is a good kid ask to take a plate with him in-
between classes, then I’ll go ahead and let him,
as long as he always brings the plate back.
The problem is when students come in here
and pack a picnic with a bunch of sandwiches
to take with them or steal a plate of cookies.
That’s not okay”
As this new “in house” dining service
continues to serve students, controversy will
inevitably arise as change is implemented. It
appears though, that the Caf staff members re
ally do try to please the students, and they are
more than willing to cooperate with students.
