Page 4 Arts & Life The Clarion \ April 10,2019 Flautist Arianna Ruiz performs senior recital By Chloe McGee Layout & Design On Sunday, April 7, flautist Arianna Ruiz performed at her senior recital. Friends, family and professors of Ruiz were all in attendance to hear the result of the countless hours of practicing and musical study over the past four years. Ruiz’s concert was centered around a theme of nature with many meditative musical pieces that focused on the wilderness. The concert included challenging repertoire from both late and living composers. The first piece titled “Winter Spirits” by Katherine Hoover was a haunting and rhythmically intricate composition. It featured moments of silence that created suspense and kept the audience engaged. Accompanist Vance Reese joined Ruiz on stage for the next piece to play the complementary piano part. Composed by the famed Mozart, “Sonata No. in G Major” encompassed three movements: Andante, Allegro and Menuetto. Each movement exhibited unique qualities. The composition to follow was titled “Birds,” written by living composer Herman Beeftink. It was a trio that featured Ruiz on piccolo, alumnus Chris Center on alto sax and BC student Caitlyn Could-Morton on flute. Center stood in the balcony to the left of the stage, while Ruiz stood on stage and Cloud-Morton directly across from Center. The group performed the first of three movements. Directly after intermission, Ruiz performed “Maya” by living composer Ian Clarke. It was a duet with Ruiz and her private lesson teacher Dilshad Posnock both on flute. For the fifth piece, Reese took the stage again to accompany Ruiz on a lyrical arrangement titled “Song Without Words” which was originally written by Gabriel Faure and later arranged for flute by Trevor Wye. Ending the concert was a three-movement piece by Francis Poulenc titled “Sonata for Flute and Piano.” Ruiz played expressively and skillfully, leaving the audience wanting more. Ruiz is thankful for the music faculty and all that she has experienced at Brevard College throughout the past four years. Weird weather A severe thunderstorm brought torrential rains and hail to the area on Tuesday afternoon, swelling King’s Creek out of its banks, causing leaks in at least one academic building, and covering sidewalks and roadways with a steady stream of water and ice. The area has gotten 4 inches of rain already this week, and more rain is forecast starting late Thursday and lasting into Sunday. Far left: A new icy lake forms in front of Beam Administration during Tuesday's freak hailstorm. Left: Large remnants of ice remained on campus even three hours after the storm began, such as this near the main entrance to the college.
