Page 8 Sports The Clarion \ April 10,2019 BC tennis battles Maryville and Covenant By Carmen Boone Copy Editor The Brevard College men’s and women’s tennis teams played an away match at Maryville College on Wednesday, April 3 at 1:30 p.m. For the men’s team, Tom Mittring and Tim Hengst beat Austin Smith and Cole Stinson 8-1 at number one doubles. At two doubles, Andrew Ingram and Tyler Frazee won 8-2 against Beau Branton and Egan Spoltore. Brevard forfeited three doubles for lack of players. Mittring played Smith at one singles and won 6-0, 6-0. At two singles, Hengst won 6-0, 6-0 against Stinson. Frazee beat Branton 6-0, 6-0 at three singles. At four, Nathan Boepple beat Spoltore 6-0, 6-0. Ingram played Underdown and won 6-0,6-0. Brevard forfeited six singles. The men beat Maryville with a score of 7-2. The women played well too. At one doubles, Sam Sepe and Kelsey Kushner beat Anya Dunn and Kayla Zimmerman 8-3. Jen Cox and Darden King won a tiebreaker 8-6 for the winning set score of 8-7 against McKennah Francis and Carter Dickinson at two doubles. At number three doubles, Margaret Correll and Eleanor Flannery won 8-5 against Savannah Baina and Kaleigh Basilio. Sepe one number one singles 6-0,6-0 against Francis. Kushner won the first set 6-1, lost the second 2-6 and lost the final tiebreaker 4-10 to Zimmerman at two singles. At three singles. King won 6-1, 6-0 against Dickinson. Cox won four singles versus Dunn 6-4, 6-1. Correll battled it out with Bain at five singles and lost the first set 2-6, won the second 6-1 and lost in the tiebreaker with a close score of 9-11. At six singles, Flannery lost 1-6, 1-6 to Basilio. The women won the match 6-3. On Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m., Brevard played a home match against Covenant College. Before the match began, they held their Senior Day celebration. They honored Mai Sakuma, who has been a student intern helping the team out with everything they needed the entire spring season, and who will graduate in May of 2019. Darden King was also honored, she will graduate in May of 2019 as well. Kelsey Kushner completed her degree in three years here and was honored as a graduate for May of2019. Nathan Boepple was honored for plans to graduate in December of2019. After that, Tom Mittring was honored as a graduate for May of 2019. Tim Hengst was also honored as a graduate for May of 2019. Starting with the men. Mittring and Hengst won 8-3 at one doubles against Paxton Hoggerty and Trey Wood. At two doubles, Frazee and Boepple fell to Logan Hull and Chris Morton 1-8. Brevard forfeited three doubles for lack of players. Mittring won one singles 6-2, 6-4 against Hull. Hengst beat Hoggerty at two singles 6-1 in the first set and won the tiebreaker 7-3 in the second set for a winning score of 7-6. At three singles, Frazee won 7-6, 6-1 against Ben Luke. Boepple fell to Cameron Cortman at four singles with a score of 1-6, 2-6. Ingram lost five singles to Tyler Kelly 1-6, 0-6. Brevard forfeited six singles. The men lost a close match with score of 4-5. At one doubles, Sepe and Kushner won 8-2 against Esther Eddy and Margo Koby. At two doubles. King and Cox beat Mariah Weston and Masha Lanskow 8-1. Correll and Flannery fell to Laney Beckwith and Justine Blick with a score of 5-8 at three doubles. At one singles, Sepe won 6-1, 6-0 against Eddy. Kushner won two singles against Lanskow 6-2, 6-0. At three singles. King won 6-2, 6-0 against Koby. Cox fell to Blick at four singles 3-6, 2-6. At five singles, Correll lost to Beckwith 3-6, 2-6. Flannery won six singles with a tiebreaker score of 7-3 for a score of 7-6 in the first set and 6-2 in the second set against Anna Logan. The women won the match 6-3. Darden King hits a winner.
