Page 4 Arts & Life The Clarion \ May 10, 2019 BC Wind Ensemble ends on a high note By Chloe McGee Layout and Design On Thursday, April 25 at the Porter Center for Performing Arts, the Brevard College Wind Ensemble, conducted by Dr. Eric Peterson, performed its spring finale concert alongside the Blue Ride Symphonic Brass led by Maestro Jamie Hafner. The combined band’s repertoire exhibited a wide array of musical genres. Each group performed both separately and collectively. For graduating seniors in the band, this was a bittersweet concert as it was their last time performing for Brevard College’s music department. Stephen Healy, Whitney Ward, Gryphen Blackwell, Ryan Burnette, Daniel Ethridge and Arianna Ruiz were all recognized at the concert for their tremendous devotion to the ensemble. The opening number was a nature-inspired composition written by Tyler S. Grant titled “Panoramie Landscapes” that was rich with harmonic color and vivid imagery. Next the band performed Richard Saucedo’s arrangement of Samuel Barber’s composition “Sure on This Shining Night.” Beginning with long, warm tones, the piece grew to a climactic peak before slowly tapering to a quiet ending. Then the BC Wind Ensemble exited the stage so that the brass choir could present several composures independently before intermission. After numerous delays, Chiaroscuro finally to be printed, released in fall At long last. Chiaroscuro, the Brevard College literary and arts magazine, has made it to print and can even be purchased online—though if you can wait, you’ll be able to get a free copy on campus this fall. This year’s Chiaroscuro is officially a combined issue, featuring two separate editions in a single volume: for 2016-2018 and for this past year, 2018-2019. Both editions were edited by a 2019 BC graduate: Sarah Haga for the more recent one, and Ashley Kate Stephens for the earlier edition. For various reasons, the magazine has not been in print since 2016, but student staff members have nevertheless been working diligently the past several years to make the magazine a reality, including writing and editing creative submissions, laying out the issue, and trying to get the issue printed for distribution on campus The magazine features creative work by students, including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, drama, and works of visual art.. The 2018 edition edited by Stephens was dedicated to Rakeem Sweezy, a much beloved Brevard College student who died unexpectedly on the last day of the fall 2017 semester. Several works in the issue pay tribute to his memory, including the first poem in the collection. “Sweezy,” by 2017 graduate Kirsten Lucas. Associate editors of this 2016-2018 edition include Huntley Davis, Kelsey Kushner, Ivy Itic j||l Chiaroscuro Product of Brevard College Pope, Morgan Shepard and Jeni Welch, all of whom graduated from BC on Saturday. In addition to Haga, graduating seniors on the staff of the 2018-2019 edition are Shane Sentelle and Oscar Sifuentes. Like the earlier one, this edition also features poetry, short stories, theatre and music, and various visual arts. Copies of the magazine have been ordered and will be mailed to graduating seniors who contributed to the magazine. An official launch party for this issue is planned for early in the fall semester. Copies of the magazine will be free to anyone on campus who wants one. The issue is being printed by Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) service. The magazine’s Amazon page lists a publication date of April 30, but because of a backlog of other titles in production, the title was not available for purchase on Amazon.com until May 8. Copies of the magazine will be available for free on campus, but anyone who wishes to purchase a copy from Amazon.com may do so for $17.98—the minimum price allowed by the KDP service. It can be found on the Amazon, com website by searching for author “Sarah Haga,” or by the publication’s ISBN number, 1096006472. (The website address is www. amazon.com/dp/1096006472.)
