The French Broad River Garden Club
(FBRGC), located in Asheville, NC, was
chartered in 1927 and admitted to the Garden
Club of America three years later.
With a strong commitment to “promoting
the conservation, development and intelligent
use of the natural resources ofNorth Carolina
and elsewhere,” it is no surprise that in
1955 they began raising money to support
scholarships for students in the area to study
environmental science and conservation.
Scholarship recipients have attended
various institutions including University of
North Carolina at Asheville, Warren Wilson
College and, of course, Brevard College. Our
college joined with FBRGC in 2011 for the
French Broad River Garden Club Scholarship,
awarded to students in Environmental Studies
as an aid to understand and manage the
interactions between the natural environment
and human societies.

environmental stewardship, the partnership
yields benefits to both Brevard College and
the club. Members of the club look forward
to meeting the scholarship recipients and
receiving inspiration, and renewed enthusiasm
from hearing from the recipients at an annual
gathering each year.
This excitement builds momentum in their
fundraising and mission. Students are able to
cultivate mentorships through the experienced
local growers and enthusiasts that make up
this group.
The FBRGC is not only a fundraising
group, but its members are involved in a
variety of community projects that include
offering experienced local growers as leaders
in valuing the resources of the Appalachian
region. The Club’s headquarters is on the
same property as their gardens. These gardens
are managed and maintained by the club
members.

The Annual Looking Glass Rock Writers’
Conference (LGRWC) is accepting submissions
for the 2020 conference on May 14-17.
Submissions are being accepted until
December 31. Those interested can apply at
www.lgrwc.org.
The LGRWC is a four day event where
working writers from all over the place can
apply to be admitted into one of three writing
workshops, all with guest writers to lead the
sessions. Each workshop accepts 12 participants.
If you’re looking to hone your writing skills or
get a second opinion, this is the event for you!
The fiction workshop will be led by
Crystal Wilkinson, the nonfiction by Alison
Hawthorne Deming and the poetry by Aimee
Nezhukumatathil. All three are published authors
coming to meet with working writers to help
them improve their skills.
The cost of the event is $550 with on campus
housing and $475 without on campus housing.
This cost covers all workshops, meals, receptions
and a private room in Stanback Hall (for those
staying on campus).
To help out with the cost, there are two
scholarships awarded per workshop, so six in
total. One is a merit based scholarship and the
other is a need based scholarship. These will
cover the entire cost for the recipients. Brevard
College students have the chance to receive a
BC scholarship as well to cover the entire cost.
Submissions are open from October 1 until
December 31. All those that apply will be
notified by February 1 whether they have been
accepted or not. Anyone can submit to two
