November 6, 2019 | The Clarion Sports Page 7 Tornados open cyclocross season in style By Phil de Montmollin Sports Information Director The Brevard College Cycling team opened its 2019 Cyclocross season with a plethora of strong results at the North Carolina Cyclocross Series (NCCX) event held Sunday in Winston- Salem, NC. Brevard College sophomore Dalton Collins won the Men’s Category 4-5 race, defeating a deep field of 45 riders. Also in the Men’s Category 4-5 race, sophomore Ryan McKinnon made his Brevard College Cyclocross debut with a fourteenth place finish ahead of 31 other riders. As a result of the race win, Collins was upgraded in classification to Category 2 allowing him to race in the afternoon’s Category 1-2-3 Pro event. In the Men’s Category 1-2-3 pro event, Brevard College earned two top-ten finishes as senior Carson Beckett placed fifth and Ifeshman Tyler Miranda finished seventh. Collins placed twelfth in his “pro” cyclocross race debut. The women’s side proved successful for the Tornados as well with BC racers taking second, third and fourth place and a total of four top-ten’s in Women’s Category 3-4 event. Freshman Rachel Pageau placed second with her teammates Michaela Gray (third Place) and Emma Schwab (fourth Place) finishing right behind her. Junior Nicole Rusden finished tenth, giving the Tornados a total of four top-ten finishers in the Women’s Category 3-4 race. In the Women’s Category 1-2-3 pro event, Brevard College’s Aliza Tobias finished tenth while her teammate Hannah Dickson finished fourteenth. The Tornados opened their season in Winston-Salem without two of their top racers. Brevard College’s Tyler Orschel and Tyler Clark both spent the weekend racing at the Canadian Cyclocross National Championships in Peterborough, Ontario. Orschel finished second and Clark placed third in the national championship event in their home country of Canada. The Brevard College Cycling team returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 9 as the North Carolina Cyclocross Series continues in Sanford, NC. The Sanford event will mark the second of five races for the Tornados leading up to the USA Cycling Collegiate Cyclocross National Championships to be held December 10-15 in Tacoma, WA.
