Solomon Turner, a junior from Snow Camp,
NC, experienced a successful first year season
of collegiate cross country. Solomon has never
competed for a cross country team in his life
before this season, and still managed to be
the second-place runner consistently for the
Brevard College cross country team.
“I love running and enjoyed the season,
however I don’t enjoy racing as much,”
Turner said. He also stated that his distaste for
racing competitively will not stop him from
competing in the 2020 cross country season.
“I can’t stop now because after next year I’ll
never have an opportunity to compete on a
team again," he said. Turner will graduate from
BC in 2021.
Most Cross Country runners compete for
track during the spring. Turner said that he
plans on focusing on his academics this spring
and only competing for the cross country team.
“I just can’t see myself running anywhere other
than the trails,” he said.
As an athlete in his first year of competition.
Turner has a unique perspective on the past
season. “I had so much fun and made a lot of
new friends," he said. "The team treated me
like family rather than just another athlete.
and the coaches and my teammates were very
supportive with my running.
“My favorite memory of the season had to
be going to the Pisgah National Forest and trail
running with the rest of the team or goofing
around with teammates and coaches on the
long bus rides to and from races,” Turner said.
Turner’s favorite race of the season was the
Mike and Mary Kay Johnson invitational in
Berea, KY. “I loved that race mostly because it
was my first 8k, but it was also just an overall
fun race," he said. "I would have never thought
I would be running through the middle of a
creek against 100 plus runners at the beginning
of this semester."
