February 5, 2020 | The Clarion Campus News Page 3 Appalachian culture By Carmen Boone Copy Editor “Upscale Appalachia” is a new, up and coming online magazine that aims to display local and mountain (Appalachian) culture. This online magazine will feature written literature, oral histories, music, outdoor life, art, photography, videography and more. The entire project is being headed by Kristina Holland, an English professor on sabbatical this semester, at Brevard College. She became interested in this online magazine idea after doing her dissertation work that focused on Appalachian English. “As a native to Brevard, I have always been interested in mountain culture, but during my doctoral research, I became vested in the preservation of mountain culture,” Holland said. That is what has inspired her to put this idea into action. She has several trusted staff members working with her on this magazine. The students involved are Alexis Henley, Carmen Boone, Katie McBriar and Aaron Butts. Henley and Boone are mainly the editors while McBriar and Butts do most of the web designing “Upscale Appalachia” also has an advisory board. It consists of BC alumna Kendra Jones, staff member Mary Harris and faculty member emeritus (former professor) Dr. Ken Chamlee. Holland hopes to create a sustainable online magazine that showcases all multimedia formats, and can be published each semester. The goal is to give students and community members an opportunity to be published using all kinds of disciplines and mediums. “This is an opportunity for people to explore the local area through a creative lens. I encourage all interested to submit,” said Holland. Any students that might be interested in working on the magazine should contact Dr. Kristina Holland at hollank@brevard.edu. Submissions that are acceptable include any creative work connected to Appalachia in some way. The author must either be native to the region or must currently live in Appalachia, OR, regardless of the author’s origin, content that explores the region is acceptable for publication as well. “Artwork, creative writing, videos, photography and other submissions that capture mountain culture may be submitted to upscale.appalachia@gmail.com before 15 March, 2020,” Holland said. security report The most recent security reports for Brevard College have been released as of Monday, Feb. 3 at 12:33 p.m., according to Brevard College Campus Security.
