BC Juried Student Art Show
Students showcase talent at 2020 art show

The Brevard College Art Department hosted a
juried student art show on Friday, Feb. 28,2020
at EC’s own Spiers Gallery located in the Sims
Art Center. Guests could arrive at 5:30 p.m. and
the announcement of awards began at six.
There was a wide variety of different pieces
on display: videos, paintings, photographs and
sculptures. Many people were in attendance
including members of the BC staff, its students,
alumni and supportive community members.
Kyle Lusk, Professor of 3-D Art and Sculpture
and Coordinator of the Art Major annoimced the
winners of the “choice” awards and introduced
the juror for the event, Mark E. Flowers. Flowers
is an artist himself with many credentials. He
currently lives north of Asheville with his wife
and their mountain-top studio.
Winners of the “choice” award received a
$100 prize. The President’s Choice award went
to Aia Andonovska for her photograph “Vintage
Blossoms.” The Division Chair Choice award
was given to Ricky Crull for his sculpture “Dirty
Bird.” The Alumni Choice award went to Jodi
Wyse’s wooden piece titled “Self Destruction.”
The last choice award went to Jen Cox for her
photograph “New York City Skyline.” Cox
received the Student’s Choice award which was
determined by the students casting their vote in
days prior.
The floor was then given to Flowers to
announce the event’s Honorable Mentions, first,
second and third places as well as Best in Show.
The first Honorable Mention was given to Jen
Cox for her wooden hatchet sculpture “Damaged
and Replaced.” The second Honorable Mention
was awarded to Emilie Abbott for “E.T. Broccoli
for Dinner!” Next, an Honorable mention award
was given to “Switcher” by Abigail Marie Loy.
The fourth Honorable Mention was given to
“05h55ml0.305365s” by Danielle Brown.
The fifth and sixth Honorable Mention awards
were given to Jake Robert’s photograph “Man
Turning Comer” and Sally Riggan’s cast bronze
sculpture “Hidden Waves.”
Flowers started on the final round of awards.
In third place came Emilie Abbott’s mixed media
sculpture “Don’t Forget the Depth.” Second
place was awarded to “2-0-9” by Sally Riggan.
First place was given to Gwyn Jennings for her
digital media print titled “The Teeth are the
Proof that the Bones Want Out.” Best In Show
was awarded to the interactive video “Are We
Ever Really Happy?” by Danielle Brown and
Dawson Jacobs.
Brevard College continues to support its
students and their passion for the arts. This
student exhibit will be available for viewing
until March 27, 2020. Brevard College’s Fine
Arts Gala will be held on March 28, 2020.
