The meaning of flowers
By Mickayla Smith
staff Writer
With spring coming up fast, we will most
likely see more flowers popping up around us.
Flowers can make us feel a number of emotions
from happiness to sadness and everything in
between. What if I told you that flowers for
a long time were a way to communicate in a
voiceless manner?
That’s exactly what happened. During the
Victorian Era, flowers were mindfully put into
works of art, tapestry, stained glass, carved in
stone, gravestones, clothing, wallpaper and
many more day to day objects to bring meaning
to a situation. There are no rules when giving
flowers; it’s the sentiment and intention that
represents an emotion you are trying to convey
to another person.
Since Valentine’s Day has recently passed,
there were a lot of different kinds of roses sold
in grocery stores and boutiques. According to
The Old Farmers Almanac, red roses imply
romance and love. Pink roses represent an
expression of admiration and lust. Yellow roses
stand for friendship and devotion. Also, different
colors of other species of flowers have different
meanings as well.
Here is a list of some flower meanings, and
